I was lucky to get some Ride cycling mags given to me from australia, and its a great magazine. What does everyone else read.

I'm in Australia, i look forward to getting my new issue of Ride every three months. Its kind of a bummer that they are only three monthly and at weird times as well. ie i get to read a review of the Tdf in the Oct/Nov/Dec issue and read about the giro in the July/Aug/sept issue. It would be nice if they could do it two monthly even if it means loosing a little of the content.

Besides reading it for current peloton going-ons, i also love the amount of time they devote to the "Paraphenelia" section (i wouldnt know the prices for half the crap i do if it wasn't for this section) and probably my favourite section the "Retro Review" where they look over as the title suggests older bikes. The columist section is also good as several riders write for the mag. I think Garmin's Tim Duggen (IIRC) had a blog/column thing in the last issue. (Second on the last stage of the Dauphine, again IIRC), i realise though it is probably ghost written for them or whatever the proper term is.

I also enjoy pro-cycling magazine and buy it everytime it appears in my newsagency. Although it is a bit behind (i only just got the one with pozzato on the front) and it can be a bit annoying reading previews on races that have already been run and won.

Those are the two main magazines i read, also have seen the occasional issue of Cyclesport at different newsagents but it seems similar to procycling as i was flicking through it, so i have never bought one same with Roadbikeaction, if anyone has views on this mag.

Edit: Flahute, here is the website for ride magazine. http://www.ridemedia.com.au. Here you can order ride for you international guys, but it is seems pricey for you guys, also the price will be in AUD not USD.

I have been reading Cycle Sport since the start in 93. It was like my education on the history of cycling.

I also read Procycling, they are similar but there are features I enjoy, I really like the Travel guide. I can never make up my mind to choose one so I always end up getting both.

I got Velonews when I lived in the US and picked up a few issues of Ride when I lived in Australia, I think it was monthly then and I really liked it even though I am not a techo geek and there was a lot of product reviews etc.

I used to read Winning when it was around but it became too American focused for my liking.

Overall, I still like Cyclesport and Procycling the best.

Ride is definitely the best I've seen and the only one I subscribe to. I think they've got the formula right for covering races but with content about the riders and the race that is outside of just what happened and what the results were. Magazines just can't compete with the net in that regard now and have to adapt. Too many haven't adapted and I really don't know how they survive.

Dirt Rag is an fun magazine dedicated more to the mountain biking lifestyle than racing. They feature articles on advocacy, trail maintenance, small market handbuilt bicycle companies, and festivals in addition to the occasional race report. It's worth checking out.

From a historical standpoint, the scientific journal CyclingScience is awesome. Billed as a 'Technical Journal for Bicycling Enthusiasts', it was published from December 1989 through Summer 1997. There are 23 issues in all, and they can be purchased on a single CD-ROM. Well worth the price.

I don't think there is a decent bike magazine around any more. Most are full of ads and any stories are shallow with little useful or interesting content worth the read. I dropped my three subscriptions some time ago.

In South Africa, we have the Ride and the Bicycling magazines. Neither are really great for pro racing though...but it's to be understood as the target market over here isn't yet too focussed on the pro level of racing. It would be rather useless for them to cover the tour of flanders, vuelta and dauphine libere extensively as the readers wouldn't really know a great deal about these. (We have the Cape Argus race with approx 35 000 riders and the 94.7 Cycle Challenge with approx 30 000 riders. I think they might be the biggest timed races in the world, and obviously most of those are social riders)
These two magazines have more to to with nutrition, equipment, training programs, exercises etc. But more on a novice level.
That's why I like to go to the news agent to get ProCycling and Cycle Sport. Yes they are very similar, but very interesting when the local magazines and papers are dominated by Soccer, Rugby, Cricket etc.
We do have a little/thin newspaper of sorts that covers pro cycling a little more comprehensively. It comes out monthly or so called the Cycling News...but they are really only at the bike shops and not always in stock. That too is understood as everything nowadays is about money, and without the exposure to masses of readers, the businesses aren't gonna advertise and hence pay for the magazine.

I actually enjoy Bicycling. Good range of topics (mostly road, but some MTB), decent bike porn, good training and eating tips. Too much Lance recently, but otherwise my pick of the bunch. I subscribed to Cycle Sport for a while but cancelled because even in Canada I received the issues after races which they previewed had been raced and won and, again being in Canada, I received the American edition which concentrated to heavily on American and not European riders. Just not current enough and too parochial for a non-native living in North America. I agree with tiggertoo, the net provides the best and most up-to-date resources for professional cycling.

Another vote for Ride. On a layout standpoint, its by far and away the best designed as well.

The only other one I've subscribed to is Cycle Sport which I find much better for the Pro Tour content rather than for merchandise or general riding applications.

The other general riding mags I've flicked through in shops don't hold my attention.
