Bike advertisements and women.

I was looking the thread with the title "Babes on Bikes" and I realized that many of the pictures posted there, are from bike or bike components advertisements.
Most of the time, these are showing the bike, ( the wheels or another component) and next to it a very hot, pretty woman, on high heels and a sexy pose. Dressed or half dressed, it doesn't matter.. :D

On the other hand I haven't manage to find so many similar advertisements showing equally sexy men. And usually men in bike adds are of the classic athlete racer kind, fully dressed with no sexy innuendos...

Does the bike industry suppose that women would not be interested in similar adds like those oriented to men, if those of course existed for women as well?

Or do they suppose that all women will find sexy the models women in the adds so there is no reason for alternatives?

Or they think that women are not a good or enough large target group, to buy their products?

The whole thing seems a little bit unfair to me.. ( but perhaps I'm wrong).

What is your opinion?? :)

No opinion but it is ridiculous.

Is it a problem of bike industry only though?
The whole advertisement industry seems oriented to expose sexy better-if-naked women if the product targets mostly men.
On the other hand I struggle to find many ads exposing sexy males in women products. But maybe that's just a national thing here in Italy.

It isn't a problem of the bike industry only, but we are in a cycling forum.. :)

The rule in any kind of industry is that sexy females sell stuff though, to tell you the truth, I can't find any relation between bicycles and sexy women. What kind of cohesion exists between these two things? I really don't know.

Don't bother to search in Italy for sexy males in women oriented ads, don't bother because they don't exist internationally.

The stereotypically attractive female (ones adverts use) is slim.

The stereotypically attractive male (ones adverts use) is not as slim and has a muscled upper body.

Cycling as a cardiovascular exercise burns muscles and body fat, so the bicycle represents something that can keep a female closer to optimal attractiveness, whereas may pull a male away from it.

Secondly, generally more men will have an interest in or even obsession with cycling or any kind of sport, than women so the male subconscious is more likely to flag up a woman on a bicycle as a potential "shared interest" and activity than the female one. Afterall everyone wants to have things in common with the people they have a crush on.

Another difference between men and women that goes back to basic biological reasons, is that women tend to seek out partners who are serious about life and successful. Men tend to seek out partners with which they can have a good time. Cycling is a hobby and a pretty simple one that many people practise from a very young age. It therefore ticks more boxes of what a man looks for in his partner than what a woman does.

Personally I dont get any of it though since adverts never had any impact on me but that is my amateur attempt to dissect the psychological background.

No Mysteries Here

Sex sells.
Males buy vastly more bikes than females.

Most people love their Moms and clean water, but neither get much attention, or sell bikes.

None. But there's no cohesion between beers and naked women as well. There's virtually no cohesion between anything and naked women actually, barring porn and underwear/body products (which target mostly women).
But as rickshaw said, sex sells.

I don't know if we'll get more naked males in commercials as we progress to a culture where gender equality is more valued.

What do half-dressed women and bike frames have in common? They are both objects men desire. :)

Simply not true.

Yes ... but women desire bike frames too but not always ( because there are exceptions as well) half dressed women.

So it seems that ads industry doesn't count equally all kind and genres of clients. :D
