You can start with Eddy Merckx: The Great Cyclist of the 20th Century by Rik Vanwalleghem.

I actually think the first biography of Armstrong is a very good read. Clinic matters aside, it paints a quite accurate scene of a guy wanting to win, at all costs. Whether you agree with his mentality or not, it is, as I said, interesting to read.

There are a lot of generic biographies of riders. They all were normal guys, humble and all that and were very happy to win. Some nice stories, but nothing really special.

Wiggins' In Pursuit of Glory is very good. Chris Boardman's The Complete Book of Cycling is a good read also, part biography part training book, if a little dated now.

Paul Kimmage might not meet your definition of a well known pro, but Rough Ride is pretty much an essential read.
Again, not really a pro but essential reading is Breaking the Chain by Willy Voet.

Thanks :)
That incident made the 89 race imo.

An unreal moment. Did Pedro miss something like 10 minutes in the prologue ?. Made the mountains stages crazy. Kelly. Top 10 finish. Green Jersey. Part of the PDM spice boys team.
