This is terrible news and tragic for the rider:

Without knowing any details, it's useless to speculate on what happened, but if they're talking about a genuine steer tube failure, I doubt it was a 40 pound aluminum rig that broke. His friend said that he landed correctly, so what gives?

The article called it a "steer tube" failure, but sounds more like a stem failure? No way it could be a fork failure, could it?

I hope this isn't an insensitive post, but it doesn't sound like he was doing anything different than what a lot of us will be doing all summer. When I crash I'd prefer it to be my bike handling that fails me, not the bike itself. Breaking bikes are scary.

this is my worst riding nightmare. sending healing vibes up that way. we had a community member here break a carbon handle bar on a more xc setup, but he recovered from his severe injuries. uggh, check your gear for signs of fatigue and don't use super light/ super old stuff I guess is all you can do. and proper install/torques of course too..

was just remembering how some old Marzocchi forks were failing back in the late 90's (?) don't recall the details if it was steerer tube or not, but yeah you don't hear about many mtnbike steerer tube failures--thankfully.
