This is terrible news and tragic for the rider:

Without knowing any details, it's useless to speculate on what happened, but if they're talking about a genuine steer tube failure, I doubt it was a 40 pound aluminum rig that broke. His friend said that he landed correctly, so what gives?
The article called it a "steer tube" failure, but sounds more like a stem failure? No way it could be a fork failure, could it?
I hope this isn't an insensitive post, but it doesn't sound like he was doing anything different than what a lot of us will be doing all summer. When I crash I'd prefer it to be my bike handling that fails me, not the bike itself. Breaking bikes are scary.
