Tripel Karmeliet and Flanders? To take a quote from a really corny baseball movie, "Is this heaven?" :D

In a word... "yes".

My friends keep asking me...." you're going back to Belgium again?..."

And I respond... " yeah... you would just have to be there to understand.."

As I've said before... if you don't like great bike racing, great places to ride your bike, great people, great food and great beer, then steer clear of Flanders.

Not quite the same, but Yungas road from LaPaz to Bolivia, often referred to as "the most dangerous road in the world" is one not for the feint of heart, even on a mountain bike. I actually traveled on this by car before they built the alternate road, and before they paved the upper section. It was also very wet when I was there. Hair raising to say the least.

Here's a link.

I used to work with a guy who has done that ride (he's not a cyclist in anyway), and he said the same thing. He did it in June last year and a couple of months before that, an Israeli girl was going down and as she was wiping some dirt away from her goggles, she over the edge, and let's just say it didn't end too well.

in my mind if i lost my job what i'd do is

all monuments and WC RR and all 3 grand tours in the same year.

it'd be nice to also do AGR fleche and G-W too.

it's a dream really as it would take a whole year, some financing and some luck

(for reference i've taken less than the 20 days holiday i'm entitled too for every year i've been employed, so taking 15 weeks ish off work plus recovery time would probably require me to quit)

more likely is that i manage to do all of them over my lifetime. although that would still require me to take off 3 weeks at a time for the GTs

Can a slowoldman invite himself to join you two in 2013? My baby is a senior this year but I'll be on my own in 2013. I'm in if you guys will have me along.
:D

Great! more people to pull.

I am one of those guys who plans everything years in advance. 2013 is going to be a crazy year. January is Cross Worlds in Kentucky, July is 2 weeks in France, September is Worlds in Florence. Funny thing is I am not really into goin to bike races as I have seen, and raced, in a million of them.....my Wife on the other hand always wants to go. Even the kids like it the Tour (all the swag). Personally I go to Kentucky, Italy, and Belgium for the Bourbon, Wine, and Beer :D

Well one thing I can tell you is I am not allergic to the wind! I will take my pulls. That sounds like one heck of a year! I have to say I like your motivation for attending events though!:D

Finally got around to viewing this video. WOW! Not on MY bucket list for plenty of reasons. Are you saying that this is now paved? "Awesome" video in every sense of the word.

Of my bucket list so far Ive done Cingles du Mont Ventoux and a double ascent of Alpe D'Huez as well as the muurs of the Ronde van Vlaanderen.

Plenty more to do, topping my list now are the Galibier, Tourmalet, Stelvio Pass and Mortirolo Pass.

Over a longer distance it has to be LeJog and also Raid Pyrenees.

Those are some serious credentials you've got. Take a look at the YouTube posted by Alpe D'Huez in this thread...maybe you'll want to add a South American ride to that impressive list...or not.
Welcome to the site durhamwasp...cheers.

Has anyone done Tour of the Battenkill?

I know it doesn't have the pedigree of the European classics, but as an amateur it looks like it'd be a lot of fun to do one day.

That looks like a great race. I have some friends who are doing it this year. Hopefully I can do it one of these years, but with the long plane flight and the timing (kids holidays) it is usually a challenge.

Another great race is the Ironhorse classic. Hopefully going to ride that in the next few years.

I have ridden most of big GF's (Marmotte, Etape, Maratona, and many more). Most of the big climbs in the Dolomites, Alps, and Pyrenees. I am kinda over the GF's. While I recommend everyone does a few in their life I find that they can be increasingly chaotic.

As I get older I find that there are few things better then a 5-6 days of hard riding with a bunch of friends. Luckily I have some friends I have known for 20+ years who are all strong riders.....and one who does not ride but loves to drive.

Top of my list would have to be Lombardia. I have spent the best part of a day in and around Como on the way to Milan and would just love to spend the time going through there and taking it all in on a bike. The whole area is stunning.

Milan-San Remo and Clasica San Sebastian are also on my list for the same reason.

Col de Tende is now on my list! I'll go with the CX. Looks like we've got enough interest to make it a CN group ride.
Anyone know what that building is? A perfect stop for a brewski.
