Some mfg are starting to spec them not just on XC bikes but even on their top-end "trail" bikes, e.g. Giant trance advanced 0.

Anyone with real-world knowledge of how the current crop of carbon mtb hoops perform durability wise off the groomed race track or bike park?

I see these break all the time. Ran into a downhiller who was riding her bike with 2 cracked ENVE rims.

More marketing than anything, IMO. I weighed the Enves vs. the Crossmax SLR. Enves weigh about 140 grams less, but cost about $1500 more. So, just a shade over 10 bucks for every gram you save.

Break a rim? About $200 for Crossmax vs. $850 for Enve.

Never had a problem with my Crossmax. Only one flat in years of riding, and that was on non-UST tires. Never flatted on UST tires on Crossmax rims.

I can't justify the cost, but a friend rides carbon wheels on a trail bike and has no problems. He rides pretty hard too.

I've got dents and dings in my aluminum rims from riding the same trails.

I've heard (not directly so it may be marketing speak) the Santa Cruz syndicate DH guys on enve wheels replace a lot fewer wheels per season than the guys on aluminum.

AND finally a better rear hub...wish it would make it's way into road Mavic wheels.

Yeah, so far this year's Crossmax SLR wheels have been super. I've beaten them up pretty well, and they've been good. Got caught in a massive thunderstorm coming down the mountains the other day, so we'll see how well the hubs are sealed when I ride tomorrow.

I cant justify the cost. but here in socal there are a lot of guys and gals on them especially the ENVE. I have not heard or seen a negative thing about them and this is from a large sample survey. The people I know personally building and riding them have no complaints and say they are stiff as all get out. The Enve AM 32 hole is buy all accounts bomber. the riders in reference do primarily shuttle runs on long travel bikes

although I did see a VW Bug smoking on the side of the road in 1969 and therefore all VWs suck since then. couldnt have been the driver

Socal. How cute. Let us know when you actually ride some real trails. Might have to give up your Hello Kitty stickers.

All I'm saying is that for such a self proclaimed world class mechanic you offer a lot of hasty generalizations here in this forum moose
