Cav has been awarded the MBE (Member of the British Empire) in the Queen's Honour's List. This is his image wrecked!

To be honest, the rest of the British cyclists were given one years ago, either mbe's or cbe's. Thomas and Pendleton are MBE's, Wiggins a CBE, Hell, Chris Hoy got a knighthood. Cav missed out because he didnt get an olympic medal. :D

Seems the queen has relented and let him join the club.

I think thats about the highest award he can get now though, him not being from great britain and all that.

No, he can get higher awards. The Bee Gees were from the IoM and they all got CBEs. And Arsene Wenger's got an OBE - he's not even British.

As much as I love cycling and want Cav to be a big name in this country, I stick by my view that these awards should go to people with actual contributions to society and the country or who have made a difference, or done something heroic, rather than athletes for winning and celebrities for being famous.

He should tell them to stick their award where the Sun don't shine.

I will admit to extreme distaste for anyone who accepts an award named after any colonial Empire.

Go cry in Russia. Oh wait.

I don't think that's quite right, foreign nationals can be given an honorary knighthood, but only British or Commonwealth citizens can call themself 'Sir' or 'Dame'. For instance, Bob Geldof has a KBE, he's a Knight, but he can't call himself Sir Bob.

I suspect that the IoMs status as a 'Crown Dependency' to the UK means that Cav could be a full Sir Cav KBE should that ever crop up.

I agree with Hitch though - it's all a bit much just for riding a bike!

I saw Stuart O'Grady got the "Order of Australia Medal" (OAM). I wonder what for and when? Was it for his win in Paris-Roubaix? If so, will Matthew Goss also get one soon?

Plenty of nobodies get them too, they're just not reported because no one cares.

965 total awards this time.

How ironic. Most people would see your beloved Cav as a nobody and here you are trashing on others while holding him up high.

The award would seem to me to be more genuine for the real heroes if it wasnt at the same time going to people who are at the end of the day getting it for being famous (see Desmond Lyman getting a ****ing knighthood because he had his face on tv).

I think it was a while ago, more likely for Olympic achievements than anything else, as Graeme Browne has one too :p

I'm not trash talking anyone, I'm just being blunt.

You have never heard of at least 500 of the recipients, and they are only news worthy in the local paper.

Cav is a nobody to an awful lot of people, but he's sufficiently well known for the press to report.

I have no intention of denigrating the good work lots of people do to receive an award - I was just making clear that the awards are not reserved for celebrities, who make up a relatively small percentage of recipients.

All these awards are nice to have but don't mean much. Seriously, what have some of these sports people done to really deserve such honurs. They are handed out to every man and his dog!

Royal familly...meh!

Cav was nominated by the IoM not only for his cycling but for his work as an a island amassador and work with some charities not normally reported. Not just for winning an olympic gold like some.

Someday you might get one for your forum writings, Hitch. We'll see what you say then!

EDIT: We Americans are really out of the loop in this discussion, but I was hoping Cav would get a knighthood, so I could call him Sir Frodo.

It won't be the first time that a member of the Frodo family has spent time at Her Majesty's Pleasure.

Mind you the Queen shouldn't have too much trouble chatting to a thick as pig **** knuckle dragger, she gets plenty of practice every time Harry comes round.

Being a great athlete IS an actual contribution to society. :)

I'm pretty sure the rector of my school got an MBE. Which was an almighty joke because he was useless.

Please....does a sporting acheivement really differ from an acheivement in any other persons job? just because they are famous and are on television then they don't deserve it. If it is because his work with charities then I am all for it but shouldn't be for just a sporting achievement.

Which benefits does Cav have now ?

Free beer in the kingdom ? :D

There are some odd benefits. For example, my Grandfather got an MBE and because of that I, as his next born descendent, got to be christened in St Paul's Cathedral.
