Champion's bands on jerseys

What's the deal with these champion's bands on cyclo-cross jerseys?
There seems to be no logic behind who uses them when.

Sometimes it's a former champion (Nys) wearing them in-race:

He's also wearing them on the podium:

Here you can see Štybar wearing his normal World champion's jersey on the podium.

But in another race, he had a jersey similar to Nys':

By the way, I really like how they transformed the red stripes from the regular Quick Step jersey into the rainbow stripes...

And another reigning champion (Albert) also wears a similar jersey on a podium:

Unlike Nys, he's the current champion, so he could wear the normal Belgian champion's jersey (which he does in-race). Why does he (and Štybar too, on some occasions) change to a jersey more in line with the regular team jersey?
Is it to get bigger sponsor exposure?

I guess it's team dependent :)

It's hard to have a lot of ads on the Belgian national jersey, that's why I think.
