It's sad that Rasmussen doesn't get another chance when many of the old dopers are back in the peloton. How did he get himself blacklisted? It isn't that he broke the omerta, so it has to be something else. At first I thought the way it brought the focus on doping during the TdF, just as with the Landis case. But now, we have a counterexample with Contador. So it can't be that.
I've always seen it as being about the length of time which the Rasmussen case dragged on for during the Tour. It was before even the Albi timetrial that we knew there had been fishy stuff going on, but the story dragged on nearly a week before he left. The UCI and ASO were completely powerless and being made to look like idiots by Rasmussen staying in the race. They expected him to leave to protect the sport regardless of his actual rights or legal position. In UCI's eyes he is therefore not someone they can work with anymore.
