Cateye. Wired and simple to wireless and ANT compatible and all in between.

I have two Trek Incite (either 6i or 8i) computers. They are OK except for one irritating feature; I have to manually start them at the start of a ride or after a coffee stop. They do not start automatically.

Next buy I will buy another make.

No specific brand, but just make sure you get one with a cadence meter built in. The "poor man's power meter". Just joking, but immensely useful, much more so than speed, etc.

If you often ride the same route, eg. a hilly circuit, cadence vs. gearing on hills you well know, I find is the best measure of form. Simple, cheap, a metric that works.

It's a far more sensitive/variable than speed on a hill (the minimum increments of cadence in 70s-90s rpm range on a hill are going to vary a lot more than velocity's at 10-20km/hr). Cadence is going to vary, say, by 10 units (rpm) and velocity by only 2-3 units (km/hr) on the same hill.

Tells you far more where you're at.

Cheers for the advice guys. Looking at Cateye or a Garmin. Someone else mentioned the cadence being all he looks at to know if he is in the wrong gear.

For cycle touring a GPS Computer like a Garmin 800 or the new 810 can be a saviour for touring in unfamiliar areas. It can route you.

Agree with Master50, GPS computers are excellent for touring in unfamiliar areas. Really like my Garmin 705. Do like the idea of going computer less though!

Back to the OP oq...the garmin 500 was nice but id go basic and cheap. last thing you want is to become a strava tool
