Spectator causes shocking cycling crash

In the middle of the Tour Cycliste Antenne Reunion, a spectator dragged a fence into oncoming competitors in the middle of their race.

WTF?!

It appears that the breakaway was heading for an intermediate sprint point, so they were at full speed when they fell. The fan who pulled the barrier down was apparently the father of a rider who had fallen earlier in the race. Per a journalist on the scene, he was mad that organizers had not stopped the race to let his son rejoin the peloton after falling.

a €300 euro fine? That'l teach him!

That was badly reported on that link. Other sources make it clearer that the €300 fine was levelled by the race organisers. The offender is reported as having a licence number as a club member, which is presumably why the organisers have some sort of jurisdiction over him to apply a sanction, but that could be avoided by renouncing his club membership. I've no idea whether they claim authority to give any bigger penalty, but it can be evaded if it is more than the value he puts on his membership, so it is irrelevant.

Legal authorities are apparently aware of the incident: they have authority to apply a far more stringent penalty and disincentive.

The individual riders or teams would be able to go after him. It was a deliberate act of neglegence leading to injury.

This is simply assult.

Yep, I stand corrected, poor choice of words, thanks for the correction. Still assult, no different than trying to hit those cyclists with a baseball bat.
