Hope this starts a trend, though I doubt it will. There are a lot of good reasons for not eating meat, and if an athlete in the "most grueling athletic event in the world" can pull it off, it will be a great advertisement for this lifestyle. Surprised not to see such items as nuts and beans in his diet though (that's shown in the link).

Just think, if all riders went on this diet, there would be no issue about whether to make clenbuterol a threshold drug!

There is one really good reason for eating meat: It tastes fantastic prepared correctly.

So, it won't be a first then. If he's eating salmon to get through it he's just saying it's not possible to do it on a vegan diet.

Exactly. I used to live with these two hippie "vegetarians" who ate tuna. I used to walk by and comment about hot that was the strangest vegetable I had ever seen.

A little bump to share a bit of analysis on DZ's diet from sportsscientists.com:

Like most of their other posts, the authors add to and refocus the discussion by asking the right questions.

The short of it is that its doable, and not that different from an omnivore diet in terms of when and how to eat during recovery and on the bike; what he's eating is less important than the when and how. The unique aspects of the diet may even draw extra attention to nutrition, trumping any "normal" diet in its approach.
