Dead powertap

On Sunday's ride my powertap stopped producing power readouts (mated to a Garmin 705). I assumed it was batteries, even though there was no low battery warning. Changed them on Tuesday but it's still not producing any readouts. I know this has happened before as there are some stories on t'interweb, but the story never seems to get seen through to conclusion. Has anyone any idea what the problem might be? I feel blind training without power!

Yes ounce you get used to it you cant manage without it do you have or can you get a normal powertap computer and try without the Garmin.

I some times have to youse two computers but if it dosnt work on both then its major surgery but dont do it yourself.

What model PowerTap are you using? I have the wireless version(Elite +) so my guesses are based on that.

Are you sure you have the batteries in the correct way? It is easy to put them in the wrong way. I had this same problem and it turned out that the new batteries were in the correct way, but one was below 1 volt so check that the new batteries are fresh.

Also, have you tried to see if it will pick up with the PowerTap head meaning it might be a problem with the Garmin not seeing it?

Thanks guys. Yes, it's an elite+. Batteries were in the right way, and were bought new. I've tried four new ones actually and nothing shows on any of them. I don't have the powertap head unit (bought as p/t 705 deal) so can't try a different unit, but have reset the garmin and tried re-scanning for power several times.

Guess I'll need to send it off to Saris for a diagnosis/repair and more money wasted. :(

that's bad luck, hope you're covered under warranty. not sure what I would do if my PT broke - you get so used to riding with them.

No, as is typical with these things, the warranty expired last month. I'm convinced modern technology incorporates a tiny explosive charge timed to go off a few weeks after the warranty expires. Same thing happened with my POS Dell laptop last month.
