So did Wiggins save himself for the ITT and gave a lackluster Road Race support for Cav?

Very Really. Why its not possible, wouldn't it be in his best interest or as it stands could be a factor. Wiggo with Gold, Cav with a tag as Olympic British Cyclist.

As I saw it he worked on the front until it was clear that it wouldn't come down to a sprint with Cav. Can't see he could have done much more.

I think he pulled out when all was lost and they had no chance of reeling in the break, not from fatigue.

Actually not - when he peeled off the front seemingly for the last time too knackered to do more and dropped to the back of the bunch with his head down knackered, he actually came back to thr front 5 minutes later and started back doing work. If he'd been saving himself he would've completely sat up like Froome did although obviously when Froome finished it was Wiggins doing a full paced turn with it still strung out rather than the bunch that Wiggins had which was a lot easier to get onto the back so he could catch that rest.

It always surprises me how much people seem to think aerobic cycling takes out of people - 4 days is loads of recovery from one hard effort.

Yes, Wiggins has shown many times that his main aim is to be 'bigger than Cav', part one was winning the tour and denying Cav the green jersey, part two was working to ensure that he and not Cav brought home an Olympic gold, the final part of his master plan will be to elbow Cav out of his team to race for the 'foreigners' and leave Wiggo in charge of riding for blighty.

I read somewhere that the power output of wiggins and froome (and possibly millar as well) for the olympic RR was bigger than any individual stage at le tour.

It was quite funny the mainstream press highlighting froome and wiggins finishing behind the peleton; kind of standard really.

I doubt Wiggins held out in the RR. As said before, he would have recovered enough in 4 days so Wiggins would have "Emptied the Tank" over the two races. With his results this year I doubt we'll see him race again until next year so recovery from going too deep wouldn't be an issue for him.

So lame.

Was Wiggins' secret weapon the Taco Bell he ate the night before the ITT? Did Phinney get fourth because he secretly possesses an allergy to precious metals? Did Froome podium because he sacrificed a goat at midnight to partake of its beastly powers? Vote now!

No way. We've seen the same guy all year. GB had 4, including Wiggo, on the front all day. Both Wiggins and Froome completely blew themselves, but probably more a bonk, which has less impact on a good recovery.

Apparently that infection that Froome had was some kind of variant of the spatterjay virus so maybe Wiggins has caught that off him.

Is this for real?

To be fair to him - I would have swung off the front much earlier in the Road Race. That day was one for Sky to note as "right tactics, wrong race".
