Scenario:
Which riders (Not just those in poll) would you choose for a dream TTT team that have to maintain an average of 60 km/h over the longest distance possible, where there are time checks after every km. (Assuming 8 riders, flat roads and riders have had time to train/gel)

What type or combination of riders would work best? ITT specialists, sprinters/puncheurs, rouleurs, guys with big engines, etc.

How long would they last? 20km? 30km? or even longer?

Rouleurs with a good turn of speed, ex pursuiters that can do a decent medium to long TT are perfect - guys like Phinney, Cancellara, Hepburn, Thomas, Wiggins, Boom, Boonen, Impey etc.

What you want are guys who can really ramp up the speed but not so suddenly that they can drop the rest of the team. They then need to be strong enough able to sit in and recover (somewhat) at that speed. Guys like Martin and Dowsett are super strong ITT'ers but I can't help but think that for a challenge like that, the outright speed may not be there.

Be interesting to see a team of sprinters up against a team of individual time trialists.

Say

Sagan, Greipel, Cav, Degankolb, Kittel, Bouhanni, Pettaci and Hofland

vs

T. Martin, Wiggins, Cancellara, Malori, Dowsett, Phinney, Froome and Kwiatkowski

Might be slightly faster but with less endurance than the ITT specialist team, which could be useful at 60kph. At 60 kph, it's a tough one though. At lower speeds, the ITT specialists would win everytime!

I'd go with
Tony
Cance
Phinney
Durbridge
Hepburn
Boonen
Kiryienka
Chavanel

The best team for a TTT would ideally be a mix of strong TTers (Tony, Cance, Phinney, etc.) with also some strong rouleurs types. For the rouleurs guys like Boonen, Kiryienka, and Chavanel could do very well I think. As these guys have shown strength in the ITT and the TTT.

Other guys I didn't add who could do well I think would be Keisse, Terpstra, Wiggins (2012/part of 13 Wiggins though), Kwiatkowski, Mouris, Stannard, Bennati.

Slightly off topic - why don't they include the work % of each rider during TTTs like they do in breakaways for the Tour? Would make for better viewing imo if supporting specific rider(s) instead of a team as a whole - eg. Wow Martin has been pulling for over 40% by himself... oh no Basso only did 1 pull and is hanging on for dear life at the back.

Vs Cyclocross/Mountainbikers: Boom, Stybar, Hesjedal, Evans, Peraud, Mourey, Nordhaug, Fuglsang, Danielson

I wonder what this team could do :p

2013 TTT champs
1 Omega Pharma Quick Step 1:04:16.81
2 Orica GreenEdge 0:00:00.81
3 Sky Procycling 0:00:22.55
4 BMC Racing Team 0:01:02.71
5 RadioShack Leopard 0:01:17.53
-->6 Tony Martin (Germany) 0:01:19.84 <--
7 Astana Pro Team 0:01:21.14
8 Cannondale Pro Cycling 0:01:28.74
9 Garmin-Sharp 0:02:01.94

For real though, depends on the distance. The winning team in a 60k is going to look different than TA's 17k, as an example.

60km/h seems very fast. I don't know if even the best team could maintain that very long, so pursuiters and sprinters might well be the order of the day. Though I'd still want Cancellara and Martin, for sure.
