Dwars door Vlaanderen, Omloop, Strade Bianche - World Tour

Out of Europe only few races could get the status (Oman, Qatar, Dubai, California in my opinion, Abu Dhabi only with $$$$$ after only two years) so we could have more european races added next year if the report of 21 races that have applied is correct.

It's part of the whole UCI / ASO dispute where ASO said it's going to put all its races in the .HC category !

Re: Dwars door Vlaanderen - World Tour

I'm perfectly fine with more cobbled WT races. The cobble racers allready have a short period on the calendar.

Dwars door Vlaanderen has lately been a race for the domestiques to shine, usually no superstar shows up, but this might change now.

As much as I like cobbles races, IMO there are already enough in the WT. I don't want more than E3, Gent Welvegem and RVV, otherwise I think it would rather become boring to see too many races like that on WT level, since they all have more or less the same characteristics, and one of the main differences between all those races in Belgium is the field. Therefore I'd rather watch races like this with maybe slightly weaker riders but a very different race.

Moreover I think there many one day races which deserve to be in the WT more than DdV and if it has to be a cobbles race in Belgium I think it should be Omloop, which is a very important race as the opener of the classics season.

The question is will they still show up if it stays 4 days after Sanremo and 2 days before E3.

And 4 WT races in 8 days would be a bit too much if the calendar stays as it is.

Agree with this.

We can probably expect quite a few stage races too to replace the Dauphine PN TdF and Vuelta which are also dropping down to .HC

I guess we'll find out next year.

Also about too much races look like eachother is true indeed. I read an interview with Boonen this year where he was talking about a trainingride with some other belgian pros where 1 of them made training course over cobbled climbs and roads and Boonen said that most of them weren't used in any of the races and he added "thank god" to that.
That makes me wonder why they all use the same climbs and roads so much.

Monetary concerns?

Omloop and Strade Bianche to join World Tour.

Yay! Strade Bianche :)
This does beg the question: which races are dropping out? Or is the calendar just being expanded?
"The calendar will comprise all existing UCI WorldTour races – including those in the Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) portfolio."
From UCI website.

Re: Dwars door Vlaanderen, Omloop, Strade Bianche - World To

Strade Bianche in the WT is great news and it really deserves this spot. I already wrote my opinion about DdV and although I think Omloop deserves its spot in the WT at least more than for example Dwars door Vlaanderen I still think it's pretty unnecessary. Basically every important cobbles race would be in the WT and thats just nonsensical, considering that WT races should only be the absolutely most important ones.

Omloop is no doubt one of the most important races of the season. I don't understand why Dwars door Vlaanderen was added. One of the Canadian races could downgrade to HC and Paris-Tours could replace Hamburg as race for sprinters.

Looking forward to see Strade Bianche and Omloop as WT races.

This is my argument with Strade Bianche - It will have to change dates - Too many WT races around the same time.

Strade should go between the Canadian classics and Lombardia, perhaps while Eneco is taking place, maybe even after the falling leaves. Chances of rain and mud by then.

I don't think it is a good idea to let Eneco and Strade take place at the same time, since Eneco is basically the only WT race for one day racers. But I like the idea of it later in the year when rain is more likely and it makes the season for classics specialist more balanced since at the moment it feels like almost everything important happens in spring, and Lombardia and the worlds are basically the only really important one day races after the giro. There are a few other ones but I already rate Strade higher than San Sebastian, the Canadian classics and the Vattenfall Cyclassics (which is generally a race which doesnt deserve to be in the WT, because I expect better wordplays for the names of a world tour race)

You're right. As far as current races go, I'd ditch Hamburg too. I think Québec and Montréal should stay for many more years, but I might be biased. :p

The problem with downgrading one of the Canadian races is it will affect immediately the other. Teams will not be happy if they have to move to Canada for only one race.

Yes, and while they're two races, its really just one event. If you downgrade one you have to downgrade the other. Plenty of other races to pick, the Grand Prix deserve their spot in the WT. Take TDU, Hamburg or Pologne away instead or simply don't add that many races in. We need a bit of stability in the calendar - Beijing failed and was removed, Vattenfall, Pologne don't deserve their spot. Removing either Québec or Montréal, two of the most recently added races which actually produce some entertaining racing and are often crowded with spectators - not to mention good prep-races for World Championships - wouldn't bode well for the Strade, Dwars and Omloop either, given they'd be living with the constant fear of being sacked at any moment, making a joke of all this process and never allowing races to consolidate the bigger level of prestige they get. Pick some and stick with them. Which race will UCI butcher next so they can place some oil race in? Or will they simply leave it as is (as of this reform) and go back to adding another farse after Lombardia to wrap the season up with big bucks?
