Effects of coronavirus on professional races

I know they "should not" but a big part of the them will.
Going to ski to Italy late February or going to muzic concert or football match in March etc. was very selfish and bad idea and a lot of people will question themselves later. Did I have to go there?

Yeah, and I went to a concert on March 6 (approximately 100 people) and on March 12 (larger, maybe 500-1,000). So maybe I - and the others who went to those shows - have added to this problem significantly, but at the same time it would be difficult to specifically pinpoint that you have added to the problem - and caused deaths and illness - unless you are diagnosed with CV. At this point in time it seems that many will get the virus without ever knowing that they had it.

Have to think the TDF is more likely to be postponed - I suspect that with no hope of the Olympics happening, there may be a window around Mid July or the beginning of October for the TDF to be organised - Seems like with the ITF reorganising the French Open to Mid Sep that sporting federations want to preserve their major events.

Postponing the Tour de France is almost certainly an impossibility.

All the organisation is planned for that race to take place on those particular roads on that particular day. You can't simply shift all of that two weeks back or two months or whatever. With French Open it's possible, one-day-races maybe, but not with the Tour.

That's even IF (big if) the virus situation has calmed down sufficiently to let the race go ahead.

They will skip this year, 99,9%, or really 100%. Just a matter of time until they make the announcement.
Forget about it, it's done.

The biggest events like Olympics Euro/World cups once in 2 or 4year events should be postponed to next year. This i would say that would be critical to prevent 2nd or 3rd waves. It should also be made clear that there would be no events before July and that people are given enough time to prepare for major events after July typically 3 months to avoid unnecessary stress during the infection period.

I honestly don't expect any GT to be raced in 2020 so...

How do you guys rate the chance of a Monument Series in autumn?
They could start with Lombardia on its current date (10/10), proceed with LBL, Roubaix, Flanders and then end the season with Milano-Sanremo in early November.

Classic riders could prepare accordingly and have a massive peak starting with the WC.

8 Years ago (2012) I took the plunge and spent heaps on a trip from Australia to Belgium in order to watch the Spring Classics - starting from Flanders and ending with Romandie.

I would have been mighty peeved if the rug had been pulled from under me as no doubt some have experienced for this season.

I give you another example. The couple from a small village in Slovakia went to Italy on 27/2 although TVs newspaper radios tried to warn everybody not to go there. They had an excellent sky vacation, empty slopes, good weather. Now they are diagnosed with COVID - 19 with another members of the family. Some very old. If somebody dies in this family, would you blame them? Will the couple that survive blame themselves?

Even if the Vuelta is raced I recall the route this year is bad. They might schedule the monuments before the WC. The set of riders that target both the Vuelta and the monuments is limited to Valverde and he only goes for LBL.

But, if someone planned that, they would likely get a full refund on whatever they bought already and could just go another year.

They possibly would, but most humans are pretty good at distancing themselves from self blame for cruelty caused to other creatures. Just look at the amount of meat eating in the world vs. the number of those same people who would actually physically kill an animal.

And in regards to your excellent example given, one could always blame that lack of prevention instead. Therefore blaming the Chinese and their bat eating habits (well, I shouldn't say 'their', as it is probably only a small percentage WHO consume them). And on that subject, surely it is only a matter of time before world leaders frown upon the eating of bats in much the same way as they frown upon the creation/use of nuclear weapons. If it is true that both SARS and CV began from this past time, then just f**king stop eating them!

It seems to be a race to be as pessimistic as possible.

From a situation that was completely out of control in Wuhan to about zero new cases took 2 months. Yes, the measures were very strict, but, also almost nothing was known. We can expect to see discoveries on medication that actually does a decent job of lowering the impact of the virus. There are several substances already tried out at the moment. We can also expect to see much faster and cheaper tests, and this would be vital to have a clearer picture about the actual % of infections (which is likely an order of magnitude higher than the reported positives, perhaps even more) and to contain any secondary outbreaks. This all will also allow longer-term plans to be made. For now, it's containment, avoiding the worst effects, without much thought about a term longer than a few weeks. But this will change.

It's human when faced with a lot of bad news, to think the worst. Yet I think there are good reasons to be optimistic about racing later in the year, perhaps even early summer. Cycling is perhaps one of the earliest sports to be able to make a return, another reason not to think too dark thoughts.

The prime minister in the Netherlands has offered reassurances amid the global coronavirus outbreak: telling citizens there is no shortage of loo roll, Reuters report.
“Yes, I have enough,” Mark Rutte told a shopper in an informal exchange while visiting a supermarket to show support for workers. “They have it (on shelves) again.”
He added: “But there’s enough in the whole country for the coming 10 years. We can all poop for 10 years.”

Someone tell Dumoulin quick

Hello,

With the races cancellations, I am hoping you guys will have some time to help me in a study I am doing. :) I am a researcher currently studying about Cycling Tourism in Girona, Spain. I am currently in my data collection phase. If you have been to the Girona region for training, I will appreciate if you all can help by filling up a 5 minute online questionnaire for me, and if you can share with your cyclist friends, that would be amazing too! :)

Here’s the link to the questionnaire: https://forms.office.com/Pages/Resp...hIzoOk6tUQzU2TElETzE0MDBNNjdDS1o3Q1U2SDROSC4u

With the current Covid-19 lock down situation, I am a little stuck with data collection here in the city, so if you can help it will be highly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Cheers,
Nicole

Not that guy again.
His stories keep popping up, but he is not an epidemiologist, let alone a doctor. He makes a number of assumptions, he puts together a bunch of graphs - and bam! now he's a specialist whose advice is shared by millions of people. He puts together bits and pieces that represent one kind of view. It is not the view. I would first listen to actual specialists and trust in their years of expertise. All you can do yourself is act sensibly, i.e. avoid contact, but keep yourself as healthy as possible (including going out on your own to get some excercise, fresh air and a bit of vitamine D).
