This struck me even before I read your post. That is, in the balance of global image of which sport plays a propagandistic role, how is it possible that a Third World state is able to express a dominance of which not even the superpower has been capable? Given that capital has been the means by which hegemony has been ideologically established.

I admitedly don't know all the details, though what if geopolitics are intrests behind the scandal? Just a question, mind you. In this sense perhaps Armstrong might be a stain on US integrity to which lowly Jamiaca must not be immune.

Yes, fascinating.

If we ever get details on the Jamaican doping program (let's not pretend it doesn't exist), I am sure that will be fascinating as well.

Prior to Jamaica, Canada had also threatened US dominance by taking Gold in the 4x100 in Atlanta.

But, when it comes to doping in athletics, Canada has often been able to find connections south of the border (e.g. Johnson's coach also coached Tim Montgomery and Marion Jones). The US, it appears, does excel in many things.

Can we say the same about the Jamaicans? Did they utilize sophisticated systems in other countries? Or, were they able to take advantage of some home-grown?

Dave.

Need a standard

It seems all the top winning athletes that benefit from drugs, well do. How does one find a clean sport where taking drugs would help, but the athletes just choose not to? Answering myself - one where there is no money or prestige in winning.

"History repeats itself ...."

It's hard to say what the most farcical thing about Bolt is, his Ben Johnson esque performance in 2008, his fans discrediting the whistleblower or his Armstrong like level of arrogance that the best he can do about this is to complain about reduced sponsorship money.

Whats truly shocking is all the most popular responses are saying that it is a media campaign against poor innocent Jamaica who was good at sprinting before Bolt ergo Bolt must be legit.

**** sake. I swear we missed an opportunity with Armstrong. Someone needs to really write a book next time a major athlete tests positive showing all the idiotic comments people in the media, trainers etc made in their defense that was accepted as gospel.

I thought after Armstrong "we train hard" would no longer be accepted as proof of cleanliness. The big tragedy was that they only went after Armstrong, which changes nothing. To fight doping, you need to go after the people who defended him, so that athletes wont be able to hide behind ignorance again.

Right now ignorance is an unbreachable bunker. Any athlete even guys like who tested positive, can make idiotic remarks that they know everyone will lap up, regardless of how dumb it is, and thus, shield themselves totally from any criticism, besides that which comes from us handful of loon conspiracy theorists on a handful of internet forums.

I'm reading Wheelmen right now and to be fair they do a good job of quoting what people in the media where saying about Lance when he was on top but I agree it needs to be done much more even in Wheelmen they could pick out more names of writers.

Interesting news out of Jamaica, the SECOND person on the Jamaican Anti-doping panel that gave a light 18 month ban to Powell and Simpson is under fire for criminal bribery charges.

http://www.insidethegames.biz/sport...at-banned-asafa-powell-faces-criminal-charges

The first member of the tribunal (a lawyer no less) was busted on prostitution-related charges about an establishment he apparently owns. http://rjrnewsonline.com/local/deputy-chairman-of-anti-doping-committee-arrested-by-the-police

That's about average for IOC members.

Apparently The Telegraph broke the story and right now the link to their story currently returns a 404 error.
