Today it starts.

Group A: France, Romania, Albania, Switzerland

Group B: England, Russia, Wales, Slovakia

Group C: Germany, Ukraine, Poland, Northern Ireland

Group D: Spain, Czech Republic, Turkey, Croatia

Group E: Belgium, Italy, Republic of Ireland, Sweden

Group F: Portugal, Iceland, Austria, Hungary

Really looking forward to it, will be interesting how well the new 24 team format works out. I was a big fan of the previous 16 team tournament as there were quality games every day.

Expect France to get off to a winning start, although home nations in thier first game sometimes struggle.

...i also liked the 16-team format more. everyone said france is a fav...i have a hunch there will be many surprises.

the background though feels eerie..the workers strikes and the unprecedented security. hope it will be w/o the stupid acts by both the fans and the religious extremists

France is in, predictably, the easiest group, and quite a few see them as favorites. Germany is very good at peaking for the big tournaments and they have a talented squad. Not a 'veteran' team on the basis of age, but one that has played together for some time now and the bulk of them are more or less in their prime. I still fancy them as slight favorites. Belgium might break through. We'll see if Spain, England and Italy can reverse their fortunes of the 2014 world cup. To me, after that, it's anyone's guess!!

i,m gonna put some money (though not more than a few cents) on belgium....being a total disappointment.

i think they dont (yet) have the mentality to peak at major tournaments and i think they should,ve substituted wilmots for a more experienced coach.

The players have the mentality, they have played high-stakes matches for a couple of years now with their clubs.
It's the coach, Wilmots, who indeed is the main problem. There's no vision, no tactics almost with this guy.

I've mapped it all out according do what I think will happen. Some real difficult round of 16 matches.

Italy will crash out because of their midfield deficiency (Marchisio and Verratti injured, Pirlo left out, Soriano left out) and no decent strikers. At least they can keep it airtight at the back because they have the best GK in the world this season and ever and one of the best defenses in the world.

England vs Portugal/Sweden in a QF and maybe England vs Spain in a semi where England will lose. Despite Spain not having any world class strikers they still have a stacked midfield and defense. Play a lone striker like Nolito and stack the midfield and they can play brilliantly.

Germany vs France in the other semi. The winner of this will win the tournament. I'm backing France because of home support. France have a weaker defense but equal everywhere else. I hope Weigl gets to play ahead of Basti though. Basti is good to have in your squad and in the dressing room even if he doesn't play, but Weigl this season has been so good in Dortmund. He's like the new Busquets.

I can see Iceland and Wales surprising a few people. Iceland have a really solid team. Meanwhile, when you've got a truly world class player, anything can happen, and I heard Wales have some bloke from Madrid who's alright. Against the bigger teams, they can just sit back and counter, and they should have enough quality to beat Slovakia. I expect Wales to do well if they can get out of the group stage.

France are the favourites but Giroud is no Benzema, and he will be missed (for goals, not for team morale), and will the home pressure get to them? It's a fairly young squad, and most are inexperienced in big tournaments like this. Romania have a great defence and a poor attack, having drawn to both Spain and Italy in friendlies; Switzerland should be OK, Shaqiri and a few others should be good, but it remains to be seen if the Swiss can perform on the big stage as a team; Albania have a solid team and are being underrated by the media in my opinion, they can surprise some people as they're under no pressure at all.

England should win this group, but are faced with two problems: Rooney and the defence. Rooney continues to push the 4-3-1-2 or whatever midfield diamond they're trying to achieve into a 4-3-3 with a slightly deeper nine, and the two forwards dropping back a lot. I think Ronney should be dropped and Alli moved into his preferred role so they have Dier, Alli and Kane all playing where they want to be. The defence is just pretty bad, and one injury to it will destroy the squad. Not to mention the ev growing hype back home. Wales depend on Bale, and to a (much) lesser extent Ramsey; Slovakia depend on Hamsik and to a lesser extent Kucka; and Russia are missing their two best central midfielders. The fight for second will be nice, and first if England slip up.

Really looking forward to Poland vs Germany. Poland could well be the surprise of the tournament and Germany will reach the semi-finals at least because it's Löw with Germany. If Lewandowski plays as he can they could cause many good teams with poor defences (I'm thinking England here) some problems. Ukraine might struggle but should beat Northern Ireland who although have the hearts of lions unfortunately also have the technical ability of a lion.

Croatia to beat Spain. You heard it here first. Seriously though, with Modrić, Mandžukić, Kovacić, Perišić, Rakitić, Kalinić, Brozović, Strinić, somethingelse-ić, they have a very strong midfield and attack. Defence is a problem, but Srna is pretty good and Strinić is decent. Dark horses. Spain have lost Xavi and Xabi Alonso but they have strikers now, Nolito and Morata are very good and Pedro is always there, but Costa and Torres have been left out. Koke has great skill, Fabregas is always good for Spain, Thiago has great talent, Silva is silky, Iniesta is Iniesta and Busquets is, well, Busquets, for better or probably for worse. The defence is not as talented but Azpilicueta seems to have ironed out his mistakes and Ramos is very, very good but I have been told by my Spanish friends that Pique is 'malo. Muy malo' and I cringe whenever I see Alba and Juanfran play together, especially Juanfran. Oh, and De Gea needs to keep. Much better than Casillas. Czechs are decent team and Turkey could cause an upset but my focuse for Group D is Spain and Croatia.

Belgium should top Group E, but they'll probably draw to Italy, and then need to beat Ireland, which is sometimes easier said than done, and self-declared God Ibra. They have a fantastically talented team but always seem to be so stiff when they play as a team, lacking the fluidity that their players should have. If Hazard takes his need of year Chelsea's form into the Euros then they could be very good, but once again their defence is poor. Italy are the opposite, lacking strikers, firepower and spark but with the best defence in the tournament, maybe after the Germans. Insigne brings a bit of spark, but without the brilliant Verratti and Marchisio they may struggle. With them, I'd be going into this tournament much more optimistic. Sweden have Ibra, Ireland have grit and Long, who ousted Pellé as first choice striker at Southamlton a couple of times.

Portugal have Ronaldo but if their friendly against England is anything to go they are poor without. That game was abysmal, from both sides. Seriously low level of football. More so from England, though, who were one man up and had a full team out. Austria should be good with Alaba and could surprise, and Hungary have a few decent players. Iceland are my favourite team and will win the group, and the euros.

I believe the eventual winner will be one of France, Germany or Spain. Would actually be surprised if it is someone else. The new expanded format almost guarantees that no-one can pull a Greece anymore. At least for now I believe 16-team tournament is optimal size for Euros. There's a real chance of diluting the quality of football on show with a larger one. Let's see how it goes in reality.

Hoping for some surprises, but not too many. Too many outsiders getting to the latter stages of the tournament inevitably takes away some of the suspence, as was seen in 2002 World Cup.

Due to the system employed, teams from group E have the lowest chance to reach the final, followed by teams from group F (they are statistically pitted against stronger opponents the next rounds).

France to win (hopefully)

Payet will deservedly grab the headlines but I thought Kante was excellent as well. Between tonight and his performances for Leicester during the season, I don't think I've seen him play a bad game. I would be amazed if the elite clubs aren't knocking on Leicester's door after this tournament. Love his performances. I can see Mourinho coming in for him. Wenger signed the wrong midfielders in Xhaka and Elneny over him.

Not sure about Evra. Even outside of the penalty he looked a bit shaky and I think Varane's absence will cost them in the long run.

Kante wins the ball, but Xhaka is very similar to Xabi Alonso. Two deep-lying midfielders but they're completely different in style.

Different yes, but Kante more the type what Arsenal need IMO. Not that I don't rate Xhaka, I do.

I am going for the outsiders, Croatia, Iceland, Switzerland, the Czechs, Sweden, Russia...The Euros are usually stacked and I am sure a lot of people feel that sometimes winning the Euros is harder than winning the World Cup.

Superb strike from Payet, deserved to win the match for that bit of quality alone. Very tough on Romania who played well, and should have scored after 2 minutes when they failed to score a tap-in from 2-yards thanks to Lloris blocking it.

EUro not worth the coin. Or the play.

Coppa America. Way better than the Franc vs. the romania.

Chile v Bolivia was good just there but only really a couple of decent games outside of that. Can't say I have been a fan of it so far. Will have a look now Glenn at that blockbuster of a game Argentina v Panama. :p :D

The Euro's are a better and more competitive tournament than Copa America, add that to the unsociable kick-off times for European viewers and it's a tournament I've never really paid too much attention to. I found the old 16 team Euro tournament to be even more competitive than the World Cup.

On to today, I hope Wales do well before its all eyes on how Engalnd can disappoint me once again! :D
