Garmin 305?

Any help here is appreciated.
I use a Garmin Forerunner 305 heart rate monitor and am curious about the values that it assigns my workouts, specifically calories burned. Male/49 yo.
Yesterday I rode 20.26 mi in 1:13, avg 16.4 mph. Flat out and back route.
Claims I burned 1426 calories. How far off the mark would the calorie value be? Sounds very optimistic to me. Any rules of thumb would be appreciated.

The Garmin devices do not give reliable values for calorie consumption. Some of their devices use the distance you ride, and others try to estimate from your HR. Neither method works very well.

If you want more information, go to the Garmin forums and search for "accuracy of calories," or some similar term, and you'll get a lot more information.

If you use Garmin connect and make sure your heart rate zones and activity level are correct it will be more accurate.

i use 305 extensively (it was my christmas gift last year). just ignore the calorie estimates. they are notoriously inaccurate and represent a subject of it's own. other than that, it's a very successful product
