Getting pedal extenders off the pedals

Hi all, I think I have a little bit of a problem. I had a fit done about 1.5 years ago and my fit guy put pedal extenders on my SPD pedals. I have since worked on my biomechanics and strength and wanted to see if I could just use the pedals without the pedal extenders. Also, the Specialized mechanic said that it was a safety issue with so much leverage on those pedals and that the pedals were not really made for extenders. Maybe he knows what he is talking about?

The problem is that the pedals (Shimano SPDs) don't have a nut so the spindle just rotates (even with it clamped in pliers) when I try to take the extenders off. The spindle is just too smooth and round. I have tried to soak the extender part in really hot water to get it to expand but that didn't work. I will try again but it is stuck on there tight.

Anything else I can try?

An extender installed on pedals w/o a 'nut', but a 6 or 8mm allen in the end of the pedal, which is now in the extender..Sounds like new pedals to me. Unless you want to score/damage/kill the pedal spindle, then it's unsafe to ride..only solution is new pedals. Whoever put those on ought to buy them for you.

Yeah, it is perplexing that the fit guy would do that. I didn't catch it because it was the first time I used XT pedals and I bought them from the fit place. He just put them on and I did not notice that it had no nut on the spindle. I'm thinking of using PB Blaster, maybe some heat, and a soft-jaw vise if my friend has one at his shop.

Update- a set of big vise grips worked. Took a little effort but it is done. I had to find them at a shop where a friend works.
