But my arguments was an attempt at objectivity [Edit: I'm ashamed at my sppelling mistake but I was a bit in a hurry when I posted that].

Italian major classics had been all-Italian affairs since the twenties (that was long before WWII) and the Giro was from the very start up until the 50's like has been said above. The interbellum years was isolationists. Italians among themselves and French & Belgians against each other. That can't be denied.
All those who studied cycling history know it.

It speaks for itself. The best riders were not there.

It was not his fault, that's true but I don't think he could've won so many classics against a top international field. He was not a complete rider. He was a climber/sprinter.
