Giro 2012 in Denmark?

There are rumours on a cycling Danish website called Feltet.dk. (Thepeloton.dk) that the giro will visit Denmark for the start next year. The start city should be Herning, the hometown of Bjarne Riis.

The rumours are not yet confirmed, but there will apparently be a press meeting tomorrow regarding this matter.

Perhaps it is an April fool, but I think we will know more tomorrow.

As a Dane I hope it is true

It's been rumoured here in Italy too...
I don't really know if it's true or just an April's fool, but it's pretty clear that the hypothesis of Washington DC is fallen, so who knows...

mmm

This could be interesting.

They are afterall doing Alpe as well, so France.

Probably arent going to cycle through europe though:p

So that probably means 1 or 2 days in Denmark, then fly back to Italy and take Alpe in a brief forage into France from the Dolomites in the 3rd week.

Looks like a pretty small town to start a Grand Tour in though.

True, but Giro 2006 started from Seraing...

Speaking of the route, it's too early to have an idea, though Alpe D'Huez is official, I don't know anything else.

It would be nice if they'll put the dolomitic stage that was rumoured last year, far harder than this year stage 15 (enough said)

As if I needed a reason to go back to Denmark in May. I hope the rumors are true.

I'll also point out that one or two stages in that area of Jutland could actually be a little bit selective. No mountains, obviously, but there are plenty of Classics-style short, steep climbs plus narrow roads and the potential for strong winds. Echelons could form and see groups losing a minute or two. It's enough to force teams to be very attentive and nervous, and it's not the nicest start to a gt for a pure climber hoping to peak two weeks later.

Herning is a small town but its probably one of the best know cycling.towns in Denmark. Lots of races and teams based in that area. Riis is also from Herning btw. Herning has for many year tried to get a Tour start to the town; in vain though.

About 45.000 people live in Herning. Thats not to bad by Danish standards. Its actually the 11th largest city in Denmark

Now about the route. If they go west from Herning to the west coast there will be a lot of wind possible breaking up the peloton. If they go east there is a lot of short but steep hills in the area. Not atleast in Vejle which has a short 21% climb (Tour of Denmark has a stage finishing shortly after that climb each year).

Anyways will be interesting if the story is true. I will definately be there. The World Championship this year and the Giro next year = happy me.

Yeah, Herning is not the biggest town, but as noted it is really the heart of Danish cycling, and not only because of Riis. An incredible number of Danish pros through the years have passed through Herning clubs at some stage of their development (including the Blaudzuns, Brian Vandborg, Martin Mortensen, Rene Joergensen, Per Pedersen, among others).

As for spectators, Aarhus, Vejle, Horsens, Viborg, Randers, Silkeborg, Holstebro, and plenty of other towns with cycling fans are very close nearby. I think there will be plenty of spectators. Of course, all of the really diehard fans will still make it from Odense, Copenhagen, and Northern Germany, too.

Having lived in both places, I can safely say that the Danish public will be much more aware of this event than the average citizens of Washington, D.C. would have been, though the sheer size of the D.C. metropolis might have compensated for this.

Now it is official.

The Giro will start in Herning, DK next year.

WOOOT I am happy. Only a 60 min train ride to see the biggest stars in the worlds greatest stage race.

The worlds in a few months and the giro next year. Crazy.

Yep 3 stages (prologue + 2 normal stages).

Prologue is in Herning.

2.stage goes from herning to the windy west coast, which could do some damage, but sadly they go back inland and finish back in Herning. One for the sprinters.

3.stage starts and finishes in Horsens in the eastern part of Jutland. This could be a interesting stage. This part of the country is quite hilly (very short climbs, but some of them rather steep). It is still undecided if they come past the the 21% climb in Vejle (to bad they dont finish in Vejle). Here are a list some of the climbs in the area (incl. length and %) http://www.climbs.dk/skanderborg.htm

HIlls? In Denmark?

Susan

Nownow, we do have some short hills :p

First stage will be a prolouge with start and finish at Congress Center Herning. The second stage will be from Herning to Herning as well, and will feature a trip to the western Denmark. Third stage will be from Horsens to Horsens around the "hilly" parts of eastern jutland.

So far there is no concrete details on the actual routes, and they may be influenced by sponsership from cities that want either a hill or point sprint. But all in all it looks very promising.

Aaaand Ninja'd by Cimber :D

Only flat stages or there will be some little hills?

Northwest of Horsens is the most hilly area in Denmark. So I guess there will be some small hills. But the highest hill in Denmark is below 200 m, so it wont be long climbs. Undulating terrain on small roads is a possibility, but it depends on how the route is chosen. As Cimber wrote, the west coast normally has a lot of wind, so this could be exciting.

My guess is that it will be bunch sprint on both 1. and 2. stage.

The weather is not nessecarily good in Denmark in early May. Expect everything from 8 degrees and wind to 20 degrees and sunshine.

Michael Rasmusses is saying that he hopes to gather enough money to get a pro continental status and participate in the giro 2010.

Ye 200m high but some of the hills in the area are 1,5-2km long, though the shorter ones are the steepest. Now, if there they put in one of the really steep hills near the finish line it could end in a break-away (just as the stage to Vejle does every year in Tour of Denmark with the steep climp shortly before the finish line). But, yes it all depends on how bold they will be with planing the actual route, but the possibilities are there.

Sadly they will have a long ride back to Herning so I dont think much will happen. Would have been far mor interesting if they finished the stage on the west coast (but since they start in Horsens the next day they would probably not be optimal as its on the other side of Jutland)

Ye the weather can vary (just like in Italy) but generally may is a pretty nice months. I have birthday in mid may and I have often held it outdors in 25 degrees. But weather is weather: you never know, but I hope it will be sunny :)

It is no prank.

There was a press meeting with mayors of the two towns etc.

The news broke in Denmark yesterday and I thought it was an Aprils fool. But luckyli it is not.

How a small, Danish, boring town can beat bids by Monaco and Washington DC is difficult to understand though.

They have been talking about a tour start i Denmark for years, but seem to have recognized that it is impossible to move all that equipment and people between Denmark and France. The giro on the other hand wont let logistical difficulties prevent them from going abroad.
