Oh...well, well it is a small world indeed..yes the horses heart rates have to be below a certain threshold after a short break. It is for the horses well being. They have to pass a vet inspection too...

A couple of his horses tested positive last summer for a pain killer and he was told after that he was likely to get an out of comp visit to his yard.

The lack of knowledge may be believable on his part but someone in the yard (the vet for example) should have been aware of the UK rules and known what was going on was illegal.

That does throw into doubt Black Caviar's wins..? 25 on the trot is a bit suss..

Ah you are correct I was at WEG where he came 2nd. Don't follow endurance/dressage like I do eventing and jumping.

Do you have horses? I'm down to 2 after 15 years of breeding/racing TBs. Stopped that many years ago (what a black hole) and alas they don't live forever. So I have a 20 year old and a 14 year old, both of whom raced for me.

Horses are like potato chips you can't have just one :)

Anyway I have Tremendous respect for the Sheik as a horseman!!!!

Only 1 win (from 1 run) outside Australia though. So the steroids were legal in most of the wins, assuming they were out of the system. I think that pre-race tests are usually done to ensure they are clear.

Why? I'm sure she was tested at every venue.

Besides using anabolic steroids on a filly is just plain stupid IMO. Can mess up their reproductive capabilities and darn Black Cavier's babies will be worth millions!

Too many horses die on tracks for horse racing to hold any attraction for me, and I know this well because I'm from Cheltenham (if that means nothing, google Cheltenham Festival or Cheltenham Gold Cup). National Hunt races simply aren't safe enough for the horses and I really don't want to watch a sport where an animal dies to entertain me.

And certainly not one where those animals are being put at risk by involuntary doping practices.

I agree with you...FOR ONCE

It is a greed ridden industry for sure. But the Grand National seems to have made some positive changes this year.

I think there was only one death at the Cheltenham festival this year, which given horses have died in double figures in recent years (17 one year if memory serves) is certainly an improvement but still one horse too many.

It is very difficult to defend the horse racing industry......yes horses die. In the USA statistically it is 1 per 1K starters on dirt, 1 per 1.2K on turf/synthetic. That doesn't include training breakdowns though, just racing.

National Hunt racing is extremely rigorous. I have no idea what the stats are there, but most likely higher.

I was very lucky never to have had a catastrophic breakdown (death) but the day one of mine was pulled up injured it was all over for me. Thankfully he was okay after 1.5 years of diligent care. He will always be a cripple, totally unusable for anything but a pasture ornament. But he has a home with me for life and if I die first arrangements have been made for his care.

There are many that love their horses and are committed to ensuring they spend their after work life in peace, cared for and being horses.

But we are in the minority. The majority see it as a business and the horses as 'disposable assets' :(

And yes there is the drug issue :( Not many owners are knowledgeable enough to ensure their horses are only given the drugs they require for their health. Many legal drugs are given just because they are legal and 'everyone does it'. The horse can be pumped up with totally unneeded drugs and has absolutely no say in the matter. I worked hard to ensure this didn't happen to mine.

The UK has one of the, if not the strictest medication policies in the world.

Bike racers make the decision to stick needles in their bodies, horses have No Option :(

Geez the man has over 2K horses in training do you think he has any idea when an employee doesn't follow protocol?

Same in racing. My trainer had a trace cocaine positive in a horse :( Employees were tested and the 'user' found and fired. He obviously touched the horse without washing his hands. But my trainer is the one that got suspended and was fined. You are only as good as your help.

Trainer Zarooni gets 8 year ban. No matter I don't think anyone would ever hire him again LOL!

The horses that tested positive are not allowed compete for six months (as if they had any choice in the matter!)

I have No Idea about the UK rules regarding owners but here in the states the "Absolute insurer rules" and "trainer liability rules" apply. The trainer is held directly responsible and is guilty until proven innocent, just like a rider in cycling.

Why should I get a ban because one of the employees of my trainer used cocaine and one of my horses tested positive because a trace was transferred from his hands? I didn't do anything?

I doubt Sheik Mo knew this guy was going rogue and in any way condoned it.

On British radio this morning, they were talking about our rules being the toughest in the world, but they want everyone else to follow our policy on drugs - for the rest of the world to come in line with our rules. As for trainers they resume responsibility for the horses in training - I think? hence Zarooni's ban.

Don't horses sometimes need steroids for recovery for health reasons following hard training?
