Graziano Gasparre talks

Hope he is well and the cancer has been contained.

Is he just admitting his own doping or is he going to name names?
No names yet. He says in the clinic he used to go he met a lot of famous riders, and 'later' he will name everyone. But he does say that his team definitely knew about the whole thing, even though not directly involved. That's some kind of improvement

and yes, the surgery went well and the tumor was benign.

Sorry Eshnar, Which team? He was on a few. If he starts naming riders from Mapei 2001 he could bring down some very big names.

Pretty sure it will be limited to Amore e Vita and a history of doping there will hardly come as a surprise.

Thank you L'arriviste. Hope you are enjoying life over on velorooms

This makes me sad:

“If today I’m stricken by this problem, it’s probably the fault of doping,” Gasparre told Fanini, according to Gazzetta. “For many years, to remain at a certain level, I had to adhere to the system, ruining my health and not just that.”

I'd like to know what he meant by that.

I keep an eye on all channels. :D

I have always felt that Wegelius' haematocrit violation (later cleared) at De Nardi was suspect. Gasparre's admission of organised doping tends to increase that suspicion.

You do wonder how many more riders from the EPO era will start to develop health problems stemming from years of EPO abuse.

I remember Joe Papp (for what it is worth) alluding to health problems that he attributed to his past doping.

Must be, Ivan van Mol never injected stuff.

But, given the circumstances nice to know no other than Stanga and Bugno were involved, such a nice couple those two.

Lets hope the rider gets better.

He say that during his U23 days and Mapei trade team 3, he was riding clean, but then at De Nardi-Colpack it all started.
At Amore Vita he stopped taking stuff.

I have no proofs but it's had to believe that he was almost dominating the U23 category in his days, and italian U23 category is well known for being distish.

A brief translation of the important things.

I:people say riders begin to dope since when they're youngsters. Is it true?
G:As a youngster I was very strong and I was clean; ofc I took vitamins and integrators, but no doping. I began when I left Mapei, with the De Nardi. In those two years I doped sistematically.

I: How can a rider get those substances?
G: It's an idea that came both to me and the team. When you're suddenly crushed by people you've always beaten, you start wondering. I asked my managers if I was going too slow and they answer that I needed just a little help. One of the team manager once told me: "why don't we try to do something about it?". It was him who indicated me which doctor to go to. We tried and I began to fly. Since then, I never stopped until I stayed in that team.

I:Then the managers knew about the doping.
G: Ofc they knew! But the responsibility was all of the riders: the doctor was paid by me, even if they indicated him, it was me who paid his performances and substances. And this because if you got busted they must be completely clean: they act like they're betrayed and they fire you. It works this way.

I:Was the doping taken "collectively", as a team?
G: Generally everyone is by himself. For istance, I don't know if my teammates were doping like me. But at my doctor's place I often met other riders, even though he used to arrange things in order to avoid us to meet each other for privacy issues. I probably met a dozen of riders, famous riders, a few of them are still active. I can't give you names now: there would be legal consequences and right now I have to care about my health first. But once this will be finished I'll name them.

I: 2 years of sistematic doping and zero positives. How could this be?
G: No surprises really. My doctor knew what to do, his doping program was such that I took all those substances during winter, so in the spring I was clean and at my peak. In this way the regular controls were useless. As for the surprise controls, they weren't really 'surprising'. Often we were warned before by someone else. For example, once a teammate of mine called me and told me that I was gonna recieve a surprised control the next day.

I: IS the fight against doping led by UCI only an acting?
G: I don't know, but certainly there are too many interests in play, bonds between teams, farmaceutical industries, managers. I'm almost certain that the manager who first indicated me that doctor used to have a small percentage of his income. The more riders he brought him, the more money he made. The truth is that doping is a business, too many people want it to keep it as it is.

So they were getting tip offs about when they were going to be tested, indicates corruption outside the team. What a circus.

Thank you Eshnar for the translation.

Yes, it seems they all were able to get tips (ala USPS). It seems no case will ever be closed for us to find out the truth in time (before they retire).
