The 2011 Tour de France will be 25 years since the First American stood atop the Top Step in Paris. Since then, two other Americans have stood there and the Star Spangled Banner has been played a total of 11 times. More than any other National Anthem over those 25 years! (Denmark twice in comparision).

Anyway, do you think there will be a Special Event for Greg to mark this Anniversary?

It would be neat if Greg could join Bernard on the Alpe d'Huez Podium for the Stage Win and Yellow Jersey presentations! Maybe even hold hands omg:)

Or how about Greg being an honorary Chaperone for some AFLD "fieldwork".

Sure hope the ASO has something planned.

Could I just correct You on a couple of points. The Spanish National Anthem was played 11 times also since 1986 EQUAL with America. And the Danish National Anthem was played only once in 1996 - Bjarne Riis.:D

And as for Greg Lemond it would be fitting to present him with a special accolade in 2011, for being the first American to win the Tour De France in 1986.

11-3victories by Alberto=8 spanish national anthems. Also i think they played the wrong national anthem during one of Albertos' "victories.

If Hinault and LeMond were to meet on the podium, I have a feeling it might look something like this:

US Wins 86,89,90,99-05 & 06 = 11
Spanish 88.91-95,07-10 = 10
Danish 96 = 1
German 97 = 1
Ireland 87= 1
Italy 98 = 1

WRT National Anthems played.

I stand corrected 10 national anthems for Spain. I was just adding in Oscar Pereiro's Win in 2006 which technically speaking would of made it 11. Well we all no what happened with Landis Victory that Year. And as this is a non doping related thread. I shall not discuss that. In all reality it was 10 victories for the USA and 11 for Spain. And of course Bjarne Riis Victory for Denmark is Null avoid. So technically that is Zero for Denmark. And the Number of actual victories for Spain may yet be 10 if Alberto is stripped of his title.

As i recall it was the Danish anthem which was played when Contador won in 09. Hence thats US 11, Spain 10 and Denmark 2. I suppose its only fair since the Danish should have been played in 07 instead of the Spanish so its just reversed.

Once again a US team triumphs!

No if the Danish National Anthem was played in 2009 that would make it Spain 9. Technically 10 only for the Muppet's who got the national anthem of a nation wrong on such of an important occasion .

And in all reality it should of been 3 for America 86,89 1990. And all the rest Zero.

So the full time score after the final whistle is 3-0 to the USA hypothetically and technically speaking.

So its 11 National Anthems for America. ( only three in reality )

9 For Spain ( should of been 11, only for the 2006, 2009 fiascos, and in reality zero)

2 for Denmark ( should of been zero only for the 1996, 2009 fiascos )

1 each for Ireland, Germany and Italy ( zero in reality )

So that leaves 3 nil to Greg Lemond. He sure does deserve a special accolade.

They played the Spanish anthem as well after Contador told them they had the wrong one.

wow so we have a new type of posters on the CN forums.

there are:

1- LA fanboys who think he is clean and awesome

2- normal people

3- people who think that every1 is doped

4- people who think that every1 cept lemond doped.

good job.

and no i don't think there should be given a special party for his victory. if so then next year there will be a special mention for the 26th bday of his victory and the 25th bday of some1 else vicoty and the 100th bday of some other guy victory.

Chapeau Contador for realising. Not every athlete would. Did he sing along ;) if not why?

Damn right. Though what they can do, if it means something is, as a nice little tribute, visit a mountain pass where Lemond won or something. Like they will in the Giro by visiting Alpe in 2012 because Coppi won there 60 years ago.

Or 1 day name every turn in a mountain after someone who won the Tour 3 times +. They do something similar with Italian champions on one of the ITalian mountains. I forget which one. Grappa ? Zonc?

I guess then that You wont be on the invite list. 25 th anniversary Since Greg Lemond won the Tour . No one does 26th anniversary's. It is not a milestone figure so to speak. And there definitely wont be any 100th anniversary's unless You believe in resurrection's of the deceased.

While I think it would be appropriate and nice if there was some recognition given for the 25 year anniversary, I don't see it happening.

I am sure LeMond will get a nice tribute in Velo-News and Bicycling magazines.

Lemond is one tough guy. From what he has been through in his private life. To his great exploits as a Professional Cyclist.

Allons enfants de la patrie, le jour de gloire est arrivée. Contre-nous de la tyrannie, l'étendard sanglant est levée! L'Étendard sanglant est levée...

When will we get to hear the world's best national anthem on the podium in Paris again :(

Ignoring the jingoism, yes I would love to see Lemond and Hinault on the Alpe podium. Maybe even a wee retro hand in hand bike ride over the finish beforehand:)

Yves Leterme will think a Belgian has won the Tour.

There's something for everyone in the Dutch anthem. So just let us win the Tour, and we'll all be happy ;)
