The answer is Cyrille Guimard.
Indeed! Having had a successful career as an allround talent on the track, in the dirty fields and on the road, his knee issues which had started when he was running second during the 1972 Tour forced him to cut his career short. Still, Guimard transitioned seemlessly to his role as a DS, coaching the Tour winners during seven of the first nine Tours after his retirement.
