Hot racing coming up in Australia

I dont think anyone can stop Welsford from winning the RR. Hindley will kill himself and Welsford will be strong enough to go with moves late.
Wow what a positive statement, confident in Welsford's abilities as more than just a sprinter!! I suspect that many teams will put more emphasis on all races this season, including races that were typically seen as early season ramp up ,warm up events..many teams in long draught with little to no exposure or wins..Australian national team director always plays some cards and I personally hope they pay off, always love to see national team riders beat the bigger players!! Riders who are wearing thin like Mollema or riders from Arkea, Picnic, Bahrain.. They need something to happen. And whatever we are calling Astana, they also have to turn the tides..teams like Arkea and Astana in my opinion are silly not to treat races like TDU as their TDF!!

Yes, it's a pretty much flat course on the opposite side of the country. Look here:
https://roadnationals.org.au/news/courses-2025
While it's a soft route, they are riding along the riverfront at pretty much sea level until like 2k to go and the finish is at about 60 metres, that's not a flat course. Reminds me a bit of the Richmond Worlds, it's just missing its 23rd Street in exchange for a slightly shorter lap.

Do you mean someone that wants to look up what happened on the forum during an edition? That’s very specific. Highlights of the race can be checked on YouTube.
Sure. Or maybe someone might want to recollect a conversation with another poster they may have had during a race...

Bottom line I'm just surprised there may not be a heavy demand for a TDU race thread seeing as it's the first race of the rr season and I'd think people would be excited to watch and comment on it. If no one wants a Tour of Guangxi thread that I understand, but the TDU I don't.

I searched for a Tour Down Under race thread and the last one was evidently back in 2016? Jeebuz... what happened after that?

If people don't want a separate race thread that's fine (I'd find it odd), but I'll have to make a poll so I know not to create a Tour Down Under thread. :p
It’s a tradition now, and somehow I find it fitting for races I consider “kind of” the start of the season, but not fully.

Tradition? The Forum isn’t that important.

Well obviously a few prefer to comment on the first race of the new year attended by all the teams under this daft title. A daft title where we get conflated discussions of unconnected races in Australia which are not on the world tour. Thanks to @Tricycle Rider for the effort.

The problem is that many of us here remember Jancouver, and can imagine with a great deal of trepidation the amount of scorn and derision that we all would have to suffer if anybody was so unwise as to give (in his opinion) such a pitiful and unworthy race as the TDU its own thread.

I might be wrong, but I am fairly certain there are more obscure races in Europe than the TDU which get their own thread? Were those race threads created to look up what happened on the forum during an edition?

Cycling is a global sport these days not a European sport. Some of us in the southern hemisphere are not impressed.

I remember him. Obviously didn’t like Australia or Australians. He also had an irrational dislike of Richie Porte. Jancouver should be ignored. In fact I put him on ignore.

I'll still make a thread unless someone beats me to it for the same reasons you had stated - if others wish to join that's great, and if they wish to stay in this thread that's fine too.

:)

It absolutely is a forum tradition--but no one said anything about important, because none of this is! I happen to enjoy the quirks and idiosyncrasies on these forums, they are quite entertaining. I understand others might have a different take, and I don't mind if folks prepare separate threads for each of these races. But I'll continue using this one, and enjoy seeing it pop up every Dec. or Jan :)

It’s the thread title. After the winter recess it’s the first time we see the riders. It deserves better.

Whether a race gets its own thread is determined by whether someone is willing to make one, that's all. But races with greater interest tend to get their own thread.

Thanks for the effort!
Sure thing, just watch me decorate the TDU thread with some maps and stuff, and I'll have to borrow the writeups elsewhere seeing as I've never been to Australia! :(

Any input from you and the other Aussies would be greatly appreciated btw., again, I've never been to Australia and I think you guys might have some valuable insight about the areas they'll be riding.

I’d love to help. Currently I am overseas and replying from my phone. I’d start by looking at the official website for the race (is there one?). That might have some maps and the towns the race travels through. South Australia is world famous for Penfolds wines.

There is an official race site already, thank goodness! (I'll be borrowing from there heavily and also some other sites I've used in the past.)

Penfolds wines - good to know! I live in the States and am only familiar with Yellow Tail.
