How to tell if carbon fiber is damaged.

So I am pretty sure many of us got their carbon fiber cracked or scratched, and we couldn't tell if it was the paint or the actual carbon fiber part that's damaged. I know of whacking a quarter to the area you think it's damaged, and then to another area which isn't. If it sounds differently, it's likely to be the carbon that's damaged. Do you have any other techniques in mind?

That is the only one unless you have specialist NDT equipment or you can inspect the damaged area internally.
