Ya, Sutherland would certainly fit that quality. Is he linked with GE in any way?

Very good would be inexpensive but he is limited and what 29 know so not getting any younger.

United healthcare are expanding into Europe next year and he got burnt by Chris White last year so who knows what his plans are no links that I know of.

re his age 2-3 good seasons build the team, older guy good signing imo

29=not getting any younger? The best age for a cyclist is ages 28-34 so he has just started the best years of his career. It would be one thing if he was 34-35 but at 29 his age should be the least of all concerns.

Fun fact: Horner's European adventure (second leg) started at 33.

Sutherland is exactly the kind of rider they need. What about Simon Clarke? I'm not following this too closely so I don't know if they signed him or if he's staying at Astana.

what i mean in his hes got to 29 so we have pretty much seen what level he's capable of riding at and not to expect a massive improvement.

Not really. He's been hiding in the US for the past several years, before this year, so it's hard to know what he could do in the top european races. Still, the results he has had this year shows that his level is pretty good.

At least in the beginning, I imagine Green Edge will get some legs out of parading World Champions Cameron Meyer and Jack Bobridge as the face of the team. Ultimately they'll need an Evans type, but for now I don't think it's that urgent.

Your obviously a lot more open minded on the whole matter , personally I think I he isn't going to improve much from what I've seen.

Meyer and Bobridge as the team leaders? Good luck with those guys, they've really made their mark on European racing.

I'm not talking about a GC leader that can be top 5 in a GT. I'm talking about any rider who can have a presence in a race that features a fair bit of climbing. If they get Albasini then that would be a good start. But the type of rider I'm talking about is someone like Sylvain Chavanel. Or Thomas Voeckler (before this year where he actually did a GC result). Other types like that could be Moncoutie, Hesjedal, Visconti, Hoogerland, Wegmann, Barredo, Gerdemann.

I was just about to start going about how Chavanel and Voeckler and established riders of that sort tend to be paid a lot of money, but actually, thinking about it, at least some of those riders would make sense. Not all of them are going to require big money. Talented attacking riders who keep you visible on tough stages and sometimes pick up a stage win too. Not GC men.

Give them time young fella, give them time. They're younger than you (22 & 23)... and we give you allowances for your age. :D

Both have mainly concentrated on the track to this stage of their careers, of which both have won World Championships.

Both have won National titles on the road.

Bobridge has won an U23 World time trial championship.

IMO they have some potential, particularly as one day riders.

In my eyes he would be a critical signing as I have already said a number of times. But in recent times I fear that he might not be coming over because he has been getting good results at Astana. If he was going to greenedge would they really still be letting him lead?

I also think Sutherland would be a very good signing. There's nothing wrong with 29 at all. However, I always get the impression that he is happy riding with a US squad and he seems to be growing with the team. The other thing is that he doesn't seem to be able to peak for so long so maybe would only be at his best for 3 or so stage races in a season. I spose not everyone can be Cadel.

There is a lot of young climbing talent in Australia. I saw Cam Meyer on a couple of stages holding on to the pack with about 30 remaining which gave me a lot of hope. Coming from the track he is only going to get better at climbing. He has time on his side and 3-4 years is probably his time frame to find out whether he becomes a legitimate GC rider. Dale Parker, Lachlan Morton, Lachie Norris, Tim Rowe, Ben Dyball, Joe Lewis look to be the most promising young climbers in the country. Dale and Lachie look to be the cream of that bunch but it is hard to tell how far they will go in the end.

Really? You read that as a suggestion that they will be team leaders?

As the face of the team, i.e. riders to get the Aussie public excited, 'World Champion' carries a lot of weight in Australia.

.....

Perhaps he was another excluded from the Vuelta when intent to leave became known .... he must have earned a GT at Astana

Which Lachie? Pretty even between the two IMO, although Morton could end up being a genuine star. Parker has the attributes to go along way as well.

Nathan Haas from Genesys could also end up being someone to take a punt on? Big difference between beating up on the locals here in OZ and doing it in Europe, but he is doing everything right and is still only 22.

I was refering to Lachie Morton - I know he has just been one level below Mancebo in a few races this year. he also came 6th in Langkawi from memory and was riding at a similar level to Rolland at the time. even though hi would have near the top of his for at that point and Rolland would have been at the bottom, at 19 it is still a very promising performance... and he can ride a solid TT in spite of his small stature too.

Haas is another one I didn't mention and also Zac Dempster.

Will be interesting to see where Norris and Dempster end up next year after their call up to HTC in recent weeks? Dempster especially will be a handy pick up for a team looking for a genuine all-rounder.

Simon Clarke just announced as going to GreenEDGE.

The drip feed has ticked up to be one a day (so far) this week

huge signing IMO. I hope he gets his chance to shine in the Ardennes next year should be great to watch him along side Gerro! He's one of my favourite riders too!

Alan Davis official now

OK it's official - one announcement a day this week!

Hope Alby brings some points as he is not bringing form. Will he get more opportunity in what is looking to be a sprinter rich team?
