June 16th-Prologue: Ljubljana ITT, 6.8km

First time a prologue has been included in the race, giving us two stages with potential to decide the GC. Nibali will be a difficult match to dethrone as he looks to defend his crown from last year.

I'm going to laugh so hard if Petacchi, Sastre, and Nibali don't clean up here. Out of interest, do Liquigas, Lampre, and Geox all have a strong presence in Slovenia?

I'm thinking Petacchi will give way to Bole on the sprints, so he can shine in front of his home nation.

Sprints should be exciting with Bole, Ale-Jet, Gatto, and Kump among others.

Watch out for Blaz Furdi. 12th in the Queen stage last year, hoping to improve on his performance (only 22 yrs). Doesn't have a chrono, but shows nice promise on hills and mountains.

See http://www.siol.net/sportal/kolesarstvo/po_sloveniji/ekipe/2011/06/ekipe_na_dirki_po_sloveniji.aspx for complete team lineups.

Otherwise, several people including Slovene national team coach Hvastja, rank today's surprise winner Vrečer as having good chances for overall win. The Saturday's Golte queen stage is apparently his backyard where he trains several days per week. This will surely draw large crowds to the final hell km of the Golte stage.

Yes, Bole said he will go for win tomorrow and expects help from Petacchi, who is said to have just returned from altitude training and is not aiming for top finishes in Slovenian Tour.

However, tomorrow's finish is in Kristjan Koren's (Liquigas) home town Nova Gorica, so he is also eager to win the stage. He was slightly disappointed with this second place today in TT, since he wanted to wear the yellow jersey tomorrow.

Vrecer has been beasting it this year, winning pretty much everything he has entered. I would love to see him hold the jersey till the end, as it would mean so much more to him and his fellow countryman as opposed to if someone like Nibali or Visconti won.

Can't deny this elation, awesome kit too!:

Slovenia is such a beautiful country. I watched the Giro go through Koper in 2004 but it was dissapointing because it just skirted the town, if they could ride through the old city or the harbor it would be nicer.

Ulissi (Lampre) won!
About 100 m of advantage from Croatian national champion Rogina (Loborika), followed by Špilak (Lampre) and Vrečer (Perutnina Ptuj).

Špilak was leading up to the final 2 kms of the final climb, followed 100 m behind by the group of Nibali, Ulissi, Rogina, Vrečer.

Nibali then dropped out and arrived to the finish much later.

In the last km or so Ulissi attacked, nobody could respond. Good show of the white jersey, now also the likely overall winner.
