the 1st twenty five years
I got off the phone last night with a friend, we discussed how long we had known each other and the early days of our relationship.
We met as new bike racers and wanted to race as much as possible. Even in S.California it still wasn't that easy. Training crits, Mexican races, huge group rides and training with local Pros was still was not enough for both of us.
When our paths crossed again in Europe we became pals for no other reason than being alone and the need for car pooling.
As the world wide web has it's 25th birthday, we discussed our early days without it. S.Cal had a news paper that published all the race dates with the prize lists. People would get the paper and try and coordinate travel and other needs like roadside support and hotels. Going across the US was pretty hard, getting names from the USCF of other racers trying to find a cheap place to stay and any other help.
Otto Wenz was his own personal world wide web, getting racers hosted for housing and everything else needed for a great Super Week. Which at the time was the best 2 weeks of racing anywhere in the US.
Lots of other races had little tricks, like getting paid in "Joe Bucks" in Coconut Grove, taking your Monopoly like money and going into a prize tent to purchase old sh-t like wool jerseys and Bell V1 pros that Joe had got bike shops to donate as prizes. None of that would have ever happened in the internet age. Blogged to death would have been the verdict on many races and crap promoters.
Trying to find races in Belgium,Germany and France before the internet was a real adventure, checking at bike shops, reading a Belgian Race newspaper with listings of races, all of it had to done by mail or in person and was a crapshoot at best. Talking to a non-English speaking bike shop or bar employee getting directions to the race was a real trip. Driving past a bar, and then rechecking the address on the racing news, only to realize that the pub was were sign is was being held.Bars, bike racing, beer and Belgium all go together, who knew. Had I had a message board to check I probably would not have been so shocked.
The racers and racing are pretty much the same, but the way we get to the races is way different (better ?) with the invention of the internet.
