Just read the CN article regarding Chipotle supporting Slipstream's development program. Awesome news! Without organizations like Slipstream, Trek-Livestrong and programs like Hot-Tubes, where would the future of American cycling be? Just look at our current pro national champions - Ben King (Hot Tubes) and Taylor Phinney (T-L)... And seeing how nicely the Slipstream program is bringing along guys like Stetina is encouraging Great to see organizations like these step up to fund development programs and lead us into the future!

ok...

Stetina is breing brought on nicely?? he hasn't shown a thing since becoming pro you mean? Apart from Talansky I don't se eanything nice coming from ti so far. Trek livestrong especially, only focussing on itt guys that can't climb a thing.

Dude I get that you like Colombian riders but there is no need to go bagging on riders from every other country any time the topic comes up.

Ben King can climb pretty good.

Well, Tim Roe came from Trek-Livestrong. 11th in Tour of Utah and 2nd in Thueringen Rundfahrt. Not from the US, but he's not just a TT guy, he can climb well.

Stetina finished 11th in the Tour of California while helping Zabriskie and Hesjedal finish 2nd and 5th, and finished in the group 19 seconds back at the GP Miguel Indurain while helping Kreder finish 3rd. While he hasn't been as impressive as Sicard... he wasn't the same level of talent either... Van Garderen was the US rider closest to Sicard and he outperformed him... of course coming from the Rabobank system rather then one of the US ones. I think his season while not spectacular was solid for a new pro.

And dismissing non-climbers is a bit of a one dimensional way to look at cycling in my opinion. The US isn't a cycling power, but young guys like Van Garderen, Talansky and Stetina show promise in climbs, while Phinney, King and Craddock show promise as ITT/Cobbled guys.

Putting down US development for not creating as many climbers is as reasonable as putting down Columbian development for a lack of cobbled riders.

Cycling is probably about the 18th sport in terms of popularity in the US. While there are hotspots (parts of california, greenville South Carolina, parts of colorado), it has very little popularity overall.

As far as US younger talent:

-Tejay Van Garderen - 22 years old - 3rd in Dauphine Libere
-Pete Stetina - 23 years old - 11th in TOC, 7th in 2009 l'Avenir
-Taylor Phinney - 20 years old - US ITT champ, U23 world ITT champ, 2 time P-R Espoirs winner.
-Ben King - 21 years old - US RR champ, 5th in P-R Espoirs.
-Andrew Talansky -22 years old - 2nd in 2010 l'Avenir, 4th in Tour Med.
-Lawson Craddock -19 years old - 3rd in Juniors WC ITT, 3rd in Le Pave Roubaix, podiums in larger juniors races in Germany, France and Switzerland.
-Anders Newberry - 18 years old - 4th in 2011 La Tropicale Amissa Bongo.

Some are TT guys. Some are cobbled guys. Some are climbers. Some are all-around types. No real sprinter talents other then maybe Phinney and Craddock. But this is the strongest crop of under 23 guys the US has had in quite a while. People forget how young Van Garderen is.

You can also add some young rider from Garmin to that list......i think his name is Tommy D.;) He has a whole thread on him...must be in for a really big season.:D

Hey, he's my age, so he's still young in my book. :)

Honestly though, his main issue is overhype. If you asked people if three Vuelta top 10's was a good career for a cyclist, I think many would probably say yes.

People just expected more out of him.
