Peñuela has struck out solo and dropped Classen, but the péloton has already halved their advantage so the chances of winning from the break seem pretty forlorn now. There's a classic Volta sight now: a mountain train of motorbikes in fluorescent lycra.

Down to single figures in the main group and still three boys in fluoro riding tempo to grind them all to dust.

Tavira guys look so much like they did in 2009-10 with the Palmeiras Resort sponsorship and David Blanco and Cândido Barbosa bringing the hilarity.

This is *** ludicrous, Nych looks like he's about 7 foot 250 pounds
This is a team that had Mauri Moreira at a legit 76kg doing this up the climb en route to a Mapei-style 1-2-3 at the summit, and Filipe Cardoso, a sprinter, won this stage from the break one year for the same team. Artëm Nych isn't even in the top 5 most ridiculous things they've done, and that's saying something.

Hugo Nunes! The whole grown men crying because of a stage win thing is a bit overblown for me, unless there is a serious backstory (recent loss of a friend/loved one)

I mean, he is 28 years old, his 8th season as a pro (and 3 as a junior before), and this is his first ever win... he never won even any 2.2 or National level races before, and never won as a junior either! And then considering where he is from some of this route is likely on roads he has trained on and his whole family will likely have been there.

That day is likely the peak of his whole cycling career, and he knows it, and that will have been his life for a very, very long time.

'byron munton' hanging in there
Byron Munton is on a Portuguese team, though. Zac Marriage is the surprise interloper - though I would also point out that even in arguably the single most absurd stage of W52's domination, Guarda 2017, Krists Neilandts - of the Israel Cycling Academy team - was the guy that stayed with Alarcón and Antunes through most of their exploit. The Israel team has a good record here for sure.

Pena looks good free from the WT prison, seems to have done the most work on the climb. Bike Exchange should've done the Volta!

Nych is attempting the César Veloso sprint of the last 350m but just doesn't have the legs for it. He'll take the camisola amarela, but he didn't have it to do the full exhibition.

Guérin didn't look pleased there, probably a bit upset he's been mugged off by some South African bloke nobody has ever heard of and who isn't even the leader on his own team.
