Liberty Seguros 2011 - “al estilo del Rabobank” (Ampliación)

Wednesday, September 8, 2010 | Liberty Seguros will start a new Portuguese team, "Rabobank style".

Cycling society 'São João de Ver' is a new team next year based in Portugal thanks to the sponsorship of Liberty Seguros which thus returns to the professional peloton in a long term project, and the possibility and prospect of making the step to the premier leugue of cycling in the years to come, as revealed in jornalciclismo.

Manuel Correia will become the sports director of the whole entity that will have teams in all categories. "It will be a project in the style of Rabobank" he says. Liberty already endorsed the various teams based in Santa Maria da Feira and now goes one step further.

The team will start out with about 18 riders, and will be exclusively made up out of Portuguese riders at first choice, especially under 23. Candido Barbosa will also join the staff and stay on as a rider.

Liberty Seguros had already expressed its intention to return to cycling. Untill today it is the sponsor of the Portuguese Federation and before with the team of Manolo Saiz and then sponsored a orofessional team in Portugal which ended last year.

Cycling Society 'São João de Ver', is a company which started already in 1991,and has been committed over the years to promote cycling in the younger categories andd even schools with teams from Under 23 years old.

Rui Costa, André Cardoso, António Amorim, Edgar Pinto, Filipe Cardoso, João Benta, Luís Pinheiro, Ricardo Vilela, Jony Brandao, Joao Vitor Rodrigues Cabreira all passed through their ranks before becoming professional.

Libertine was already on to something in the wrong section, but will bring it in: http://forum.cyclingnews.com/showthread.php?t=7099

To hell with it, this is awesome news. I love the Portuguese cycling scene, and it's been thin on the ground this last couple of years with the collapse of LA-MSS, Benfica and Liberty. And their company's loyalty to the sport has reached the point where it's like a lovable old dog who keeps doing stupid things but you love it anyway.

I look forward to this project. There are lots of talented youngsters in Portugal who could make this team well worth watching; their u23 amateur team in Santamaria da Feira has been visible in some quite significant races - the most noteworthy results being Fabio Silvestre's 3rd in the Volta ao Alentejo.

nice idea to have a portugese team of young riders, good for the sport in the country. unfortunate choice of sponsor.

amazing news for portuguese cycling :D:D:D:D

also benfica is getting back into financial shape(benfica is one of the largest football clubs in the world and after a few years of bad results is getting up, champions last year and this year some say we are favorites even for the champions league(ya i am a huge benfica fan) so hopefully with this project and maybe a benfica project with money from the football team the portuguese cycling scene could see its best years ever.

I don't understand "unfortunate choice of sponsor".

First of all, Liberty Seguros of Spain-Manolo Saiz is very different of Liberty Seguros of Portugal-Vitor Paulo Branco & Americo. The final situation was the same, but there are no connections between the two projects.

Liberty Seguros of Portugal finished the sponsoring after the three positives of last year. But they don't want to stop the support the cycling and I want to say: "Thanks".

They sponsored a under23 team (Sao Joao de Ver) in 2010 and they gave the money to the Federation to did controls out of competition to all the Portuguese rider this year too. I think it was a great decision of Liberty: to collaborate for a clean cycling.

For the future, they want to create a new project. And I think Liberty has to be supported for all the cycling-fans. The company never dopped the riders. It was a problem of the riders and/or the team manager. The company take hard decisions: stop the sponsoring immediately. The company started a new project. And they will create a team with the best director of young talents of Portugal: Manuel Correa. I think they are in the right way!

I'd say it was very good news. LS were still heavily involved in the Volta, even though they had pulled the team sponsorship after last year's doping disaster.
Clearly, they are looking at the sport as a long-term investment and with an interest in nurturing young, home grown talent.

In these harsh economic times, which has hit the IP particularly hard, it is gratifying to think that a stable outfit, with long term goals, is being established in a hotbed of Euro cycling.

and i'm not gonna lie,i support the comeback of manolo saiz.

Nothing to do with Manolo. I read a few days ago an old interview with Manolo where he was considering moving to Asia to develop the sport there. He looked to me like a cycling version of Guus Hiddink and the like, traveling around the world coaching teams where there is no tradition for the sport.

I know full well that there was little link between Liberty Seguros of Manolo Saíz with Liberty Seguros/LA Aluminios-Liberty Seguros/LA-Pecol that ended in 2009. But what held them together was the company sponsoring the team. They were burnt by cycling with Manolo Saíz and clearly scaled back their commitment by putting all of their attention on the Continental team - which was probably too good not to be ProContinental if we're honest - and then they were burnt again by Ribeiro/Nozal/Guerra last year (though Liberty Seguros Continental of Portugal were seen as an unofficial feeder team for Liberty Seguros of Spain - hence Ribeiro and Nozal resurfacing there after being bounced from the Spanish team for failing the 50% test).

You'd forgive them for leaving the sport entirely after that. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me, and all that. They seem incredibly determined to make a fist of their cycling sponsorship though, since they're back again. It's both great (the sport needs loyal sponsors, Portuguese cycling needs a bit of a resuscitation, it needs new life injecting back into it after losing three teams in two years, and their colours did make for some excellent kits) and slightly face-palming (and what if this project goes awry for Liberty Seguros? They're incredibly trusting of the people they work with, shall we say...).

But I like it. The Portuguese péloton seemed very thin on the ground without them, and I've been keeping an eye on their amateur and u23 squad results.

Libertyne, I am agree with you. I believe in Liberty Seguros of Portugal and I don't believe in Liberty Seguros of Spain. Why? Because I want to know what a company do when they have problems. And it is not only my opinion. If you are in the invoices business, you know that Liberty Seguros is a ridiculous company in Spain with a small percent of the invoices. And Liberty Seguros is the number 1 in Portugal. Yes, it is the same company, but the decisions are not taked for the same persons. Liberty Seguros of Portugal is independent. They did the publicity/advertaising in cycling and the other countries of Europe don't support him. Liberty Seguros of Portugal asked help to Liberty Seguros of Spain and to Liberty Seguros of Europe, but the other don't want to put money for cycling. Well, Liberty Seguros of Portugal don't change his way... and the results are obvious: they are the number 1 in the Portuguese market.

I really hope that some of the youngsters of Liberty Seguros-Santamaria da Feira get rides in the new team. Gonçalves and Fabio Silvestre in particular have been impressive in the Portuguese domestic calendar and deserve a chance to ride at the next level. Hopefully Liberty, like the predecessor, will have aspirations to ride beyond their borders - I know LA-Paredes Rota dos Móveis do - and this will manifest itself in more than just the Vuelta a Asturias and Vuelta a Madrid this time.

If it wasn't for DAOTEC I would miss so much Southern European & American news & results.

Santi Pérez? Gustavo César? I thought they said it was going to be all-Portuguese? I like César though - he'll be a good signing. Daniel Silva was surprisingly good in the Volta this year - outperforming his more illustrious teammates Pérez and Zaballa.

If they're going to take on the Spaniards, I hope they pick up some of the better Xaco guys still available (Serafín Martínez for example), though they're too late to go ProConti which is a shame - I would say I'd like to see them at the Vuelta but it's a bit too close to the Volta, which they sure won't want to just have as a warm-up.

I expect to see at least three guys from the current Liberty amateur setup - Fabio Silvestre, Rafael Silva and José Gonçalves. I think all are ready to ride at that level, and I hope that at least Silvestre (who is the most talented of the three imo) gets the chance to get out of the self-contained Portuguese scene and get to the next level like Rui Costa and Tiago Machado.

João Cabreira can f**k off, though.

I never much liked Cabreira even in the days when LA-MSS were just about my favourite team. And then he did 'a Valverde' last year, being banned for tampering with his samples and continuing to ride. I dislike Loulé based solely on those revolting jerseys that make it impossible for me to support them with a straight face, whereas Liberty are awesome. So when it was Nuno vs. João last year, I was rooting for Nuno all the way and took great satisfaction in seeing Nuno triumph (boy, that was short-lived - and yet I still like him more than Blanco).

oic i thought you didn't liked him only cus of the tampering his samples part.

well liberty seems to be gettings lots of portuguese young guys. hopefully they become proconti in a couple of years and get a chance to ride a vuelta. i can see them doing more then many of the teams that were there this year
