digging deep into the stupid locker, yet again, yes, I know, sports reporting is not rocket science, but there is more here, Liggett and Roll are implicated in keeping all the crap going. To me, its not about the doping, its about the thuggery surrounding it. This was a money making/fame scheme, to put it simply. It worked until it didn't. For the most part the only really cool thing about cycling are the helicopter views, which are about as beautiful as any from any sporting event, period. But think about it, there is relatively little skill in cycling compared to swimming, tennis, soccer, etc, its brutally hard, seeing it in person mostly sucks and most of the people who participate at the higher levels are pain freaks, terse monomaniacs and/or out and out jerks. More importantly, pro cycling has always been a carnival side show that has been a commercial vehicle for really shady or irresponsible sponsors. Also, as mentioned by others here and elsewhere, doping has a direct impact on performance, whether its spread evenly throughout the gene pool is irrelevant. In tennis, you may get stronger, etc, but this won't help with hand eye coordination or shot selection. So, how to popularize a sport that has unpleasant participants, is simplistic in the extreme and is hard to watch in person, create "heros" promote them, protect them and wa lah! the money will fall. Liggett is too stupid to realize this, while Roll knows better and has dialed in his own fame most handsomely.
