The green light literally flashed onto the contest's official Web site shortly after 1 p.m. Thursday, signaling the mad dash to Mavericks. E-mail, text and Twitter alerts also notified fans and surfers worldwide.

Waves are expected to easily top 20 feet Saturday and might nudge 30 feet by the finals. Heats begin at 8 a.m. Saturday, with the finals expected to start about 1:30 p.m. Trophy presentations are slated for 3 p.m.

That was awesome. The announcers were just some surfer dudes who were hilarious trying to do the math adding up scores. They gave up after a couple minutes

The ustream covg is sheer agony, but it has SO much promise for cycling future racing covg. The technology is young, but what a bright future. It is what the internet has been promised to be for 15 years. Now we just need to beef up the quality of the images and marry it to hd tv's.
