McQuaid v Garmin Team

A few weeks ago El Presedente McQuaid threatened to withdraw the license of the Garmin Cervelo team and charge them big bucks for the drugs test.
Whatever happened about this ????

Mcquaid

According to Mcquaid

"McQuaid gave Vaughters the ultimatum of confirming in writing to the UCI that he is not part of the breakaway league, and thus not contravening article 1.2.019 of the UCI regulations, by April 30. If Vaughters did not bend to the UCI's will, then from May 1 his team would incur the full costs of the UCI Biological Passport. Cyclingnews contacted Vaughters, who would not comment on whether he responded to the UCI.

McQuaid adds: "Should you fail to pay these invoices, the program on your team will be scaled back down to the level that your team is actually paying for," implying that Garmin-Cervélo would be reduced to a Pro Continental team.

Does this mean that Garmin will not ride the Tour de France ????

I dont really understand the downside for Garmin ...

dont make the statement and dont pay. The result will be - oh yes - LESS testing.

I do think that kind of ultimatum (and actually the UCI rules themselves) have some fair trading issues. Isnt that called restraint of trade? I guess it is under Suisse law ??????

Pat's busy trying to figure out why Heinz won't return his call after making the statement: "there was no corruption during my chairmanship". Pat, that's the sound of a bus coming...

Why aren't they paying the full cost anyway?

the cost of the bio passport is apparently subsidised by the UCI, so breakaway and you have to pay the full cost yourself. Dont be in the BP and you cant enter UCI races.

That's right, the UCI put up most of the cost and the teams can either pay their share in smaller chunks or one lump sum before a specified date in the calendar.

But why doesn't he threaten HTC, Liquigas and what other teams that are breaking away?
Why bother? If McQuaid sees JV as the ringleader then he's the guy who gets threatened with concrete boots. If McQuaid threatens all of the potential breakaway teams then there's a much greater chance that they'll stick together and fight him. By picking off JV he can divide and conquer.

Hey PAT are you out of your cotton picking mind ? Picking on JV will get you deeper in the mire not out of the hot water that you need to avoid !

Better still take the vacation your Doctor has ordered then we can All get on with a settled life rather than the "storms in the teacups you are regularly creating !
