Like almost anyone who has been in this sport long enough I consider Merckx the greatest rider thats ever lived but the one thing I cant figure out is why he, and Hinault, to a slightly lesser degree are ignored for there almost silence on the issue of doping.
They remain the real "Patrons" of the peloton.

they see what Armstrong did as the right thing and they would have done the same thing in his place if they were given the opportunity. Remember Hinault reneged on a promise to help LeMond win a tour after Lemond sacrificed his chance to help Hinault win his 5th.
