A buddy of mine in Belgium destroyed his back and can no longer ride...wants to sell me a 97 (I think, he thinks) Merckx MX leader with the columbus MXL frame...the motorola colors I believe...says there is no rust at all as he has kept it inside and was never too much of a rider anyhow...all campy 9 record...for 500bucks...anyone out here know much about this frameset and have any opinions?

IMHO probably the finest Merckx model ever. Smooth, bright ride, decends like no other. Made for hours in the saddle w/o problem or issue. I own one, have owned 2 others in the past. If it fits ya, you can't go wrong. $500 is a steal, buy it even if it doesn't fit, but it, part it out and sell the frame for twice the $500.

It's a 57...and I usually ride a 56 but have tried other 57's and seem fine...I am 6 feet tall with fairly longish legs......but I think I would be ok...hopefully...can always shorten the stem ect...yeah, will def. pick up as have always wanted a good Merckx...he's happy as he got it for the same price about 9 years ago but never did much on it...I should have gotten one in Belgie when I lived there, but had no money...if it doesn't fit, I guess I could part it out...he says it is in great shape...if I sold it I would certainly split the money even with him as I feel bad for him via the back and that we are real good long time friends...wouldn't want to take advantage of him...

I am 6 ft tall and all my Merckx's(and DeRosa for that matter) have been 58. 57.5 top tube. Think it will be fine. Fairly slack seat tube angle, great for longish femurs..gotta buy it son.

Need to get a bit more attitude with the seat, but yeah Very good move, clean it, new tape and saddle, maybe tyres and it will look super sweet

True enough...these are just the pics he sent me...will have it in november...certainly will have to tweak via stem size probably....and the requisite stuff of course like seat height...he is about 5'9 I think and the bike never fit him...hence him giving it up, that and his back...but it's in very good shape I think...anyhow, for 500 bucks don't think I can go wrong...or I hope!

As I said, the bike is a little bigger than what normally ride...if it does not fit will have to throw it out to the wolves...but I am going to do my best to make it fit me...short of inserting titanium extensions into my arms and legs...might even consider that actually! But hopefully it fits...
