So, who is doing the Super Bowl halftime show? (Just want to make sure I watch it, if it's worth the while. )

Other than that, which team is looking relatively healthy and competent right now, and looks like it can withstand further physical punishment?
You can see a really bizarre disconnect about the audience. Bad Bunny is a global superstar based on newer metrics, sales, streams, Internet hits and concert tickets. Some other artists that were on short list were Sabrina Carpenter and Morgan Wallen who ultimately were not selected because of more edgy content to their songs.
The strange thing about math is Bad Bunny writes and performs primarily in Spanish, Super Bowl audiences will be minority Spanish speakers and secondary point average age is outside Bunny's demographic.
If you attend games you find things that are way, way outside modern marketing strategies. You see stadiums full of all ages, races, languages, female, male, and songs from Neil Diamond, Cher, John Denver, AC\DC, Metallica, White Stripes have everyone regardless up, smiling getting an overall positive reaction.
I have personally seen people who would never, ever by choice listen to Take Me Home, Country Road or Enter the Sandman, 7 Nations Army, Sweet Caroline, ect
Something about the music just unites everyone in the moment, it works and it's not supposed to.. I personally feel like picking Willy Nelson with Chris Stapellton Tracy Chapman as special guests or some other mashup would have been many more effective. Artist who are not currently topping the market but have commercial connections to culture. If you see quirky things like Lady Gaga playing with Rolling Stones or Metallica..so the artists, not agents and marketers know what is up. Would John Mellencamp be my first choice? Probably not but artist only needs to pull off a few songs that stadium and at home audience can relate to.. Sheryl Crow in for a song or two.. Bad Bunny is behind the 8 ball, if he sings songs that made him a star tens of millions won't know what is going on..not his fault.
Walk This Way was written and recorded in 1975..Benny and the Jets 1973..Take me home, Country Roads 1971..if you would tell me these songs would make stadiums come alive I would say no.. I would be wrong. If asked I borderline hate Sweet Caroline.. but at a game it's awesome.

That's a really good post about halftime shows and sports transcending genres, and I think you're right. I don't know that I'd call them mash-ups, but promoters in the past have indeed done an excellent job of finding a headline artist, and secondary artists to play before and with them. There have been shows where it's been mostly One Big Artist (Rihanna, Beyonce) but even then, other artists still perform at the same same Super Bowl show. I'm not sure it's even been announced who is playing alongside Bad Bunny.

I'm old enough to remember when some old farts were upset when big name artists took over the shows (MJ the first really big one) and wanted to go back to the days of Up With People!

As an aside, one of the most played songs in sports was Alan Parsons instrumental track Sirius, which the Chicago Bulls used as their intro for years and years. A track that was short, never saw radio play (unless it was played on late night FM radio as it's the track leading into Eye In the Sky). Parsons said he gets zero royalties for it being played. With how copyright law works, the Bulls paid something like a one-time payment of $100 to use it in a public way. Wild.

Apparently Darnold has an oblique injury.
Supposedly he strained it during routine throws in practice. He said he didn't want to push it & limited himself for the rest of practice. No prior injuries of this nature. I would imagine if it's still bothering him after pregame warmups - it'll be pain meds to play through it. He absolutely has to play. Can you imagine the disaster if Drew Lock had to start. Lol

If the Pats beat the Texans they will do it the way the Seahawks and Broncos did. A long, slow grind. I don't actually think the Texans are so good because of their defense they are unbeatable.

Sucks about new stadium being yet another dome. Especially in an area where the weather isn't that terrible. We may reach a point where teams get so comfortable, when they go to Buffalo, Green Bay, guys actually call out sick out of fear of having to play in the cold, when 16 out of 17 of their games are played in 70 degree "weather".
Did you watch the Broncos-Texans game back in Oct? They were extremely lucky to win that game. First of all they knocked Stroud out of the game late in the 1st. He was having a great game up to that point (6/10 passing & 2 nice runs for 1st downs on 3rd & long). And Mills couldn't do anything in relief. The Denver O was pretty stagnated most of the game. It was Nix's impressive 25 yd scamper late in the 4th that put them in FG range & the subsequent walkoff winning FG (18-15 was the final).

All these new dome stadiums are absolutely ridiculous. Vince Lombardi is rolling over in his grave. Lol. Football is an outdoor sport - basketball is an indoor sport. I guess these owners get that fact confused. And even the outdoor stadiums in cold weather venues have heated pipe systems under the playing field that keeps the field above freezing. And add in those huge heat fan blowers, heated benches & "hot hat" helmet warmers - stuff Lombardi would say is for sissies - players have it pretty good in these outdoor venues compared to what the old timers had back in the day. Lol.

Yeah, Stephen A was all about discounting Darnold's ability this morning while Cam Newton says he can play. It'll affect his core torque for quick, snappy passes. If his protection is average to good he can step into throws and not have any issues other than those that seem to affect him. Specifically the apparent invisibility of the 6'8" guys hands in the passing lane....
It was pretty clear that most talking heads want to see Chicago and LA.

Keeping the turf consistent is an evolutionary plus, IMO. No need to blow knees to pay homage to Lombardi or any other coach that treated players as disposable and then expected team "doctors" to retune them at half time. Kenny Easley's misuse and early death can take the Macho out of the old school critique.

It's pretty clear that Darnold has to win - injury or no injury. Remember last year he led the Vikings to a 14-3 season only to get skunked by the Rams in the opening round. Lol. Now he goes to Seattle where they're paying him a pretty penny (3 yrs/$100m with $55m guaranteed!) and leads them to a 14-3 record & #1 seed. So, he can't lose or he'll be the biggest laughingstock of the league & they might as well run him out of Seattle. Lol.

It's no different than Superman has to win against Denver & keep path open to the SB. He did his job last week knocking off the Jags, now he's the got Broncos. His stumbling block the last several years has been the Gunslinger & Co. No Mahomes this postseason....so no excuses. And do you realize he & Loser Lamar are only two current "Tier 1" QBs that have not been to the SB (Mahomes, Stafford & Burrow are the other Tier 1s).

Though I'm a mild Bronco fan once upon a time ago having season tickets & wouldn't mind seeing the Broncos win, I'll be LMAO if Superman loses this game.

Agree Darnold has to win this game, unless he's so hurt he can't play or he plays great and the D lets him down. He loses this game, to a banged up SF team, there will be calls for Seattle to move on to Jalen Milroe next season.

Buffalo and Allen may get a little slack, they are the most banged up team, against the most healthy team, on the road. But again, only if he has a great game, and the rest of the team lets him down.

Sounds like you are endorsing the Texans to win the SB there Nomad. We'll see!

I agree the media is all focused on LA and Chicago. The Seahawks, heck, the entire pacific northwest, has always been an afterthought to the media centers of NY and LA.

Lombardi, Halas, Paul Brown, Bud Grant would cringe at today's indoor arenas, especially in warmish weather places. Don't forget, it wasn't until the late 60s that turf heating systems even existed. Before that it was whatever the field is, frozen solid or not - you played. And in the infamous Ice Bowl, the heating unit failed before the game. There are short film clips of guys using their cleats trying to stomp on parts of the field to break the ice up pre game. And when those sideline jet engine heaters came around? Bud Grant refused to let them on his sidelines! He wanted his guys to get out on the field and work if they wanted to warm up.

Forgot that Kenny Easley had passed. For a short time he was as good of safety as I ever recall seeing. That rare combination of an ability to read defenses, cover like glue, and hit with authority. I recall Todd Christensen saying he hated playing against Easley, not because of Easley hitting him, but because it meant he was unlikely to even have a single pass thrown his direction all game, and Todd was a damn good TE. Glad Kenny made the hall before passing.

I haven't really been making too many predictions, but here goes for this weekend:

In Denver-Buffalo I think the team that scores last is likely to win (not has the ball last), as it should be low scoring, and a struggle. So something like 20-19 Denver taking the lead late, and holding it is my guess.

The other AFC game should be a real grind. I like the Pats beating the Texans at home there, I'll call it 16-13 in that one. Turnovers may be key.

Everyone is jumping on the Rams beating the Bears, by a bit. One perspective is the Bears won several close games, but also should have lost a few (like to GB last week). Many people seem to think of the Rams around week 10, forgetting they went 3-3 down the stretch, and Carolina handed them the win last week with a pathetic coaching at the end. Rams are good at jumping out to a lead, so I'll still take them about 33-30 after building up a good lead by half.

Seattle should put away SF, and at this point I see them winning the big game. People seem to forget they have won 11 out of 12 games, and the only loss to the Rams, in LA, when they fell behind, Darnold threw 4 picks in his worst game, and still almost won missing a last second FG. This could be as bad, or worse than the game a couple weeks ago. I'll take Seattle over SF about 23-10.

I agree with most of what you say but find the Seahawks Coach Mike saying "if" Darnold is ready and Drew Lock is totally prepared. Then there's Jalen Milroe....
Is it just me or has vague gamesmanship become a thing or is it an indication of rare hubris from Mike McCormick...the D coordinator?
The only thing he hasn't said is: "We expect our D to contribute 18 pts and the kicker 3 more" as a strategic backup to Sam Darnold and the offense scoring no points. Fun messaging and the oddsmakers are likely spinning.

That's a good prediction but at 20-19 they wouldn't cover the spread (1.5).

I looked up the #1 seeds in last year's playoffs. The Chiefs finished at 15-2 & the #1 in the AFC. They played Houston & beat them by 9 (23-14). Detroit also finished at 15-2 were #1 in the NFC but lost to the Commanders by 14! (45-31). Remember that was the shocker of all shockers with Detroit being such heavily favorites at home.

So, will Denver take care of business like KC did last year or will they lose like Detroit did?

Has to be one of the dumbest decisions of all time before the half for the Bills. Otherwise good game so far and Broncos D coming up big with turnovers.

Josh Allen's terrible receiving corps just cost the Bills the game on two plays in a row.

And one two of the worst PI calls you'll ever see.
If Allen and the Bills don’t make the stupidest decision ever before the half they win the game.

Great job defensively by Denver and Bo held it together. Payton is coming close to 2 Super Bowls.

No, if Allen doesn't overthrow a wide open Kincaid near the GL with a few seconds left in the 4th, they win & no OT.

Allen choked - he was terrible in this game: 2 picks & fumble - 3 turnovers! Lol. I remind everyone he's a "Tier 1" QB & suppose to singlehandly win games. And what's his excuse now? No Gunslinger in the postseason & he still can't get to the SB. Lol. Bottomline: He's very overrated & really not that good of a passer.

And what can you say about Bo Nix - getting the job done! Nice, precision throws. Impressive mobility with his scrambling & running. Good audibles. All this from just a 2nd yr player. Payton has done a helluva job developing him . On the bad side, Joseph has got to fix that run defense - Cook smashed them.

We'll see who comes into Mile High next Sunday for CG. Whoever it is, it should be a dosey.

Broncos dodged a bullet. I wouldn't say Allen choked, for if just a few balls had bounced the other direction, they would have won the game, though he had some bad throws, and missed some guys open, but against a very good D. I also loathe games where there's a huge penalty late that hands the game to one team. Did Tre White commit PI? Maybe, probably. But a 43 yard penalty was the third rail.

Seattle looks like they are about to blow out SF. 17-0 in the first. Wow.

Allen didn't play great, but in OT he drops a ball right into both hands of a receiver who didn't manage to get open by a single yard, to win the game, but Cooks just hands it to the Denver defender.

Buffalo also gave up on the run, even though they had been using Cook effectively. The guy who's seat has to be getting hot is Sean McDermott. Also the shine on OC Joe Brady lost some lustre.

Bills fans may not have wanted to hear this, but even had they won this game, I didn't see them winning the Super Bowl. Did anyone?
