New form of doping?

Pozzato is foregoing sex as preparation for the Worlds. Is this the new strategy for saving something "special" for the big races? Will we see riders seeking the services of sperm banks? Store during off season, inject before the big events?

I expect an explosive finale and a should he win, a massive celebratory discharge of champagne...watch out podium girls!

Poor old Pippo. He's just a pinball machine of laughs. :p

All credit to him for the old school approach though. There was a time when that was de rigueur.

Didn't Cipo once say that "it" took less than the energy in a Mars Bar though - as a reason for explaining why he thought it was just a lot of tish and phipsy. :)

I was at a Sean kelly talk in the Guinness brewery in Dublin years ago and he was asked the question was it true riders had to abstain from sex for a week before a race and if so was Sean still a virgin?

might have been true considering his twins were born late in his career!

Love that this article makes cycling news without a trace of irony. A testament to Pippo's larger then life character I suppose.

Can you imagine if Tyler Farrar or Cavendish said the same thing in an interview? I can see a very taken aback journalist.

You might also note he says he hasn't had any sex since he broke up with his girlfriend in June.

It's easy to swear off sex when you're not getting any anyway.

that's called accepting applications. i don't see what all the fuss is about but i'm sure he doesn't have a problem getting laid.

Wait a second -when was his last win? In May at the Giro.

If Pippo wants to win the Worlds he needs to have a night out with Schleck & Stuey and get back in the saddle and do some horizontal training.

so what about masturbation?

It's not the sex that's killing these guys. It's staying up all night looking for it.

I presume these guys aren't romancing themselves?

Oh man, that is walking a thin line.:D

We'll see you in a week or so.

O o o o o. Ya, that IS walkin' a VERY thin line - but it isn't so much THIS post, which, imo, is within boundaries (barely) - but the responses it will get.

Susan - hope you've got a thick skin and good sense of humor. Love your race reportage.

Not new.
But it works the other way for woman. Sex the night before is performance enhancing.

I thought a study came out back in 96 just before the Atlanta Olympics showing some evidence that sex would negatively affect your performance if you were a guy but would help you if you were a girl. Does anyone has a link to this study?

I don't know but at that level, to me those extra 60-80 mins of cardio would definitely take a toll on your training routine and recovery. Besides, who can think about sex after riding 6 hours, motorpaced and with a few hills?

I am pretty sure Pozzato wouldn't have too many problems finding some sex, the guy is like a cycling rockstar driving a Ferrari in Italy lol..not as easy as Cipo though...

Also, even if sex doesn't affect your perfomance the placebo effect on him might be huge.

I recall reading, many moons ago, that the stoic Irishmen went for months at a time without having sex with his wife. But Kelly was a man from a different time and a different place; clearly he was cut from older rock.

Funny, too, but we NEVER hear a bad word mentioned about him . . . he really was the last of the Hard Men - no pun intended, Susan - of the sport.

60 to 80 minutes?? You're just showing off now.... :)

there is a lot of evidence to show that sex has no negative effect on performance, in fact in many ways it can help it. It decreases tension and anxiety, which in turn can lead to undisturbed and deep nights sleep prior to races, it can also increase your testosterone level.
