new tyres issue

Hello,
Yesterday I've bought some Maxxis Detonator 700x28c tyres from a local shop, because my old Kendas (also 700x28c) were pretty beaten up. I got home and noticed these aren't what they are supposed to be. They are indeed marked with the label and also have the 700x28 inscription on them (pictures 1 & 3), except on the inside they have a '23' written on them (picture 2). When i've installed them on the wheels, i've noticed they are clearly visually thinner than my old tyres, so i've measured them, and yes they are 23mm. Now the problem is .. according to the Maxxis website, the 23mm doesn't even come in black. So the question is, is this a manufacturing fault or are these fake ? Has anyone encountered this issue before ?

I don't use these tyres . Is it possible you have a older model no longer produced?
Obviously if your not happy return them and get the correct ones and let the shop deal with it.

Where did you buy them? They may be OEM tyres. Are they wire or folding bead? Did they come in proper Maxxis packaging?

I bought them at a local store, like i said.
Honestly i don't know if they are wire or folding - i don't know how to figure out the difference between them, but they do seem a lot softer and flexible than my previous Kendas, also they were a nightmare to install...
There was no packaging.

The main issue I see, is that .. if i take them back for a refund and they are fake, then the store can resell them to a person that's clueless about it. Also this raises questions about the quality of products they sell.

Yes, local store. What local store? Is it a back street, mainly servicing one room shop or a branch of Evans?

If it's wire it won't fold up well and will have been sold to you with just a tag on. For want of a better description, it'll look like it would on the wheel, the wire makes it hold it's circular shape.

If it's folding it will have been folded up and sold to you in a package. The bead is kevlar so the tyre will collapse if you tried to stand it up.

It's a pretty much a noname one servicing room.

Tires can have different dimensions according to design and/or brand. Your Maxxis tires may be thinner in width but also taller.

The only way to test is to set up two wheels - one with your old tire and one with the new. Measure the circumference by rolling them out, with the valve perpendicular to the ground. There may be a slight variation if real 28c tires, but not markedly.

Hope this helps. My own advice if needed: stick to Continental tires. Fantastic value, longevity, protection and performance. I swear by them.

I've actually compared them, the old Kendas are also taller by around 2-3mms.
Anyway i've picked these up, because i was on a low 25-30Euro budget for both tyres and wanted something better than what i had before ... little did i know :/ I guess i should have picked the Michelins - that was my other option.

that tire is a 23. The all black is likely an OEM version.

It might just be a Maxxis thing, I have a set of Maxxis ReFuse 28's and they measure up quite skinny more like 25's but are quite tall, compared to my Conti GP 4000 s 25's the Maxxis 28's come out skinnier and I have noticed at the place I work that as a rule that Maxxis run skinny

What do you like about the Michelin's over the Conti's?

They make me go much, much faster

Oh, and they come in a nice shade of red....which matches my new Catlike helmet.
