No love lost for Lance - media reacts

He's getting his comeuppance for sure.

But sadly, there's still enough of this;

Who cares?" said Pedro Murillo. "He raised so much for cancer research, that's more important (than) if he doped for some races."

to resurrect Lance.

I've seen this from some sports jurno's and press folks who should know better. As long as this false narrative survives then there will be a place for Lance.

I was satisfied !

Oprah Winfrey is that pleased with herself , and the Interview with Lance ,
that she is now turning this Infofest into a Two part Event !
" He did not come CLEAN in the manner i expected "! The way she explains her story on CBS , leaves us with the need to make OUR OWN Mind up about whether he is " Contrite "!

CNN's Ed Lavendera reported from the premises of " Mellow Johnnies ", a few minutes ago . In my blogs i predicted that " the Meat " of the interview would be available before the screening and as i jump from one News Network to another , it is becoming very clear , i will be able to sleep through without missing a thing .

Man, it is a relief to see the mainstream press representing what I've seen on cycling forums all these years. It doesn't even matter to me what Armstrong himself does, if people still think he's great because of Livestrong, etc. I am just happy that people know the truth and are able to make up their own minds based on that. Of course, we will get a calculated 'confession' to obfuscate as best as possible, but the tide has clearly turned.

It is a shame there isn't more media fact check - it would be nice to see how many of these hacks who are attacking the Uniballer spent the last 13 years acting as his mouthpiece and attacking all those who blew the whistle on him.

A good example of re-writing history is Dan Weasel at Yahoo.

Yep. Most of these clowns didn't care then and they don't care now.

It's so much easier to stick one's finger in the air to figure out which way the wind is blowing.

On a side note, I just love the way these sports jurnos are slamming cycling as such a dirty sport... but those football games over the weekend were bad to the bone.

ESPN had a live interview with Betsy this morning and she was terrific. They also replayed the debate from their popular morning talkshow (Mike and Mike) and the hosts vented about how they were more disgusted by the way Lance treated good people than his actual doping. His character is getting a full airing publicly.

this is finally where i had hoped this would go. finally the focus is on the damage he inflicted on good honest people.

before the justification was always "well, everyone was cheating and he was doing good for cancer".

you can't justify actively destroying good honest people.

Armstrong will have a hard time finding allies in the regular press. He committed a cardinal sin against the media when he sued for libel. Even if members of the press do not think about it consciously, the issue will be there in the back of their minds. They will see a bogus libel suit suit as being bad for business. Worse it will be seen as an assault on the fourth estate, and the press loves to defend its turf while sanctimoniously crowing about their importance in a democracy.

The Oprah news gives the media a chance at another round of beating up Armstrong, this time without being forced by editors to include a paragraph saying that Armstrong has always denied using drugs.

From the BBC piece. Short and sweet.

Analysis

Kate Dailey
BBC News, Washington

Lance Armstrong spent much of his career vehemently, and often angrily, denying doping charges.

So admitting exactly the opposite would for Armstrong be less an exercise in humility than a necessary step in rebuilding his career.

If he has admitted to doping, he would be able to testify to Usada about how and when he doped and who helped him - and, in doing so, perhaps lessen the lifetime ban imposed on him by the International Cycling Union.

Choosing Oprah Winfrey, more a television personality than a journalist, allows Armstrong to spin his tale in the most sympathetic light possible.

Her style leans more towards the redemptive confessional than the hard-hitting expose, and the cycling pro might assume he can rely a bit on the goodwill her fans have for her.

For Winfrey, who has been less of a fixture in the public eye since she retired from her daytime talk show in 2011, the Armstrong interview is a coup.

It's especially useful as she tries to continue the 10 months of growth she's helped orchestrate at her once flailing network.

Yeah, totally sucks and other than Buzz Bissinger or whatever his name is, I haven't really seen any self-referential 'whoops'. But I'll take what I can get, I suppose.

Since the apparent doping confession didn't bring peace to the heart's of the haters, were will they go when the "damage he inflicted on good honest people" crusade fails to satiate the hate in their heart? I'm sure you can surmise where it will go from there also.

Hey speedway, can you explain how people are meant to accept an apology when even you yourself have to refer to it as an "apparent doping confession". Bonus points if you can get the word hater in once again.

Seems one huge error was made by the Liestrong PR team.
Oprah should never have been allowed to give this such long pre-advertisement.
The social media and not un-omerta'd MSM had enough time to destroy the whole point of the controlled come-out, and Lance's image comes out worse rather than better. Yes, maybe legally i's an advantage, but the damage control failed in letting Oprah go viral with this.
Not at all intensionally, and rather passively and avoidingly, Oprah may have triggered a huge MSM reporting upgrade. And yet, she may not look too well either over this. Letting the scum get off easily.
Is Oprah maybe also being demoted in the MSM pick order? Her power dimishing?

I saw something earlier on the clinic saying Oprah expressed surprise there were leaks about the interview before she even got off her plane flight home.
She won't be pleased if that's the case. She does know how to play in the public forums. Popcorn please.

hey speedway, i have never shied away from the hate label.

i do. i hate lance armstrong.

as i hate injustice.

he is one of the vilest humans on this planet.

and he has 100+ millions through fraud.

i actually won't be happy until he is impoverished and goes to prison. so get used to it.
