No Sungard next year

Times are pretty hard in the technology market, so this is probably unsurprising. I've often admired how Riis has successfully mined IT sponsors, especially because it seems to me like the industry and cycling make for slightly odd bedfellows.

if contador doesn't get banned it shouldn't be too hard for riis to get a couple more sponsors, also specialized may come in hand in that situation as atm both treck and cervello are naming sponsors in big teams and specialized isn't, being the naming sponsor of the team of a very likely tour winner is very good publicity for a bike brand

I know OPQS are riding Specialized as well, and is that still the case for Astana?

i heard astana contract was running out and without contador on the team maybe specialized desn't want to renew. . .

there were rumours about astana riding focus next year. . . but i don't know where i heard that

Might very well be. It makes sense that a name sponser less means less money :)

No the budget will be the same. Saxo Bank will pay Sungards amount now that they become sole sponsor:

"Saxo Bank has now decided to exercise an option to step up and become the sole title sponsor."

"With Saxo Bank ready to take over the full title sponsorship again, the parties have agreed for SunGard to step down and terminate SunGard's deal for next year. The agreement has no influence on the 2012 team budget."

Will be interesting if this means that they might prolong the sponsorship beyong 2012 soon aswell. Might depend on what happens with Bertie

Is it still possible to have a second sponsor for 2012?

Maybe Saxo Bank wants to step up his funds and wait for a powerfull co-sponsor to match SKY, BMC and Radioshack. If Contador is cleared a pretty obvius bet is Specialized like Parrulo says. A duel of Schleck/trek vs Contador/Specialized during the next years at TdF is a gold mine.

Depends on the country.

Cycling is a rich person's sport in parts of the English-speaking world. Heck, Australia's top domestic team is sponsored by a financial planning firm.

If they open a branch here in England I will join :)

I think I can fairly say that they won't.
It's not a regular bank, but more of a investment bank/financial market advisor/stuff-that-normal-people-don't-really-understand-but-make-a-lot-of-money-bank.

Which really makes you wonder why they sponsor the team.
Very few Danes have anything to do with Saxo Bank in daily life.

Good on Saxo Bank for putting more money into our sport during the economic crisis.

Pretty sure it's almost totally online and you can open an account there. I took a look once and I seem to recall that it was a speculation thing where you made money on the markets, a bit like online betting.

Riis says that he will have at least the same money as before. Máybe the new deal with Saxo Bank actually increases the team's budget slightly
