I didn't think it was embarrassing at all.
Was he trying to do a squat? Looked like a jump/spring at the end.
I didn't see the orange shorts guy going up the steps for comparison.

Parrulo, this was not a squat. Peep sponsor's quote for clarification.

And for the record, we're mocked b/c of the rainbow-colored super hero underwear we ride around in. :p ;) :)

There is no such thing as a Jump/spring. He was squatting but wasn't going deep, you have to at least reach parallel otherwise you aren't doing anything. The jump at the end of the squat is just adding insult to injury as that's a good way to get an some serious back injuries (herniated disc anyone?).

Oh and just because some guy look big, it doesn't mean that he is a roided up freak that can't do any functional work.

There's also cyclists who squat like this though, which I don't think will be mocked by anyone. :D

That's a proper squat, the guy is a beast.

I don't expect any cyclist to squat any huge amount of weight, except guys like Foerstemann, Kittel and Greipel, but you would expect a professional athlete to at least be able to do a proper squat form wise, the weight is irrelevant

It is correct that, as a squat, that would be an embarrasment. It is NOT a squat. Parrulo is quite correct in pointing this out - and in how a squat must reach a certain depth.

The "embarassment" is working on an explosiveness lift. It is a variant of the box jump found on this page: http://www.stack.com/2013/10/17/explosive-leg-exercises/. That is why he is doing the stairs in the same way. It works not just the quads, but also the tendons, calves, and metatarsal musculature.

To recap. He's not doing a squat. Its not an embarrasment, and it doesn't really compare to the squats with weight at all. Basketballers do similar routines to improve jumping height (white men can't jump?).

Cyclists are mocked appropriately. Go to Eurosport's video of "big punchup" at Tour of Portugal. That's a big fight? No wonder we're considered the crazy ballerinas of the sports world.
