A young Paul Kimmage, 5th from left, sponsored by Sudafed!![]()
Benotti69 said:i dont actually see the irony, i doubt at that stage in his career Kimmage, as an amateur in Ireland, knew anything about doping. It was only upon entering the pro world that his eyes were opened.
It is slightly funny, but not hilariously so. It would be ironic if it happened after he wrote his book.
Darryl Webster said:I couldnt agree more. WTF is a maker of EPO doing sponsoring a bike race?..
What next, Imperial Tobaco sponsoring Oncology wards?.
TeamSkyFans said:I think at the time sudafed was purely a decongestant containing ephedrine, which at the time wasnt banned.
Maxiton said:Based on my studies of Libertarianism, I think Colombian and Mexican drug cartels should be able sponsor cycling teams. After all, they have all the money, so why not? (And how different would it be from Amgen and the makers of Sudafed, Bourroughs Wellcome Co.?) And also the CIA.
Thanks for posting the great pic. It could only be improved if it were signed by Bjarne Riis, Johann Bruyneel and Lance.
Darryl Webster said:Of course Paul was just a young innocent lad, the irony is that he`d become the outspoken anti doping voice he`s become. Cycling could do with many more like him.
No way was I sugesting hypocrisy.![]()
Benotti69 said:I didn't think you were but it is likely to be misinterpreted by some of the 'lesser lights' on here who dont know that cycling in Ireland was such a minority of a sport that to call it a minority sport meant is was bigger than it actually was. Sean Kelly raced his first few races on a standard bicycle and not a racing bike..
RTMcFadden said:Actually, Sudafed is manufactured and distributed by McNeil Consumer Products Co., a division of Johnson & Johnson.
andy1234 said:What has the minority sport comment got to do with anything?
Benotti69 said:My comment was to say that to hint at substance abuse in Irish cycling is so laughable, as laughable as LA being clean.

andy1234 said:Darryl wasnt hinting at doping in Irish cycling. Only you seem to have come up with that angle.
Secondly, you dont seem to know much about Irish cycling history based on your substance abuse comment.
Darryl Webster said:Blimy...the only "hint" that that was my sugestion by my posting of the pic is that one contructed in peeps minds!
Im fairly sure Paul Kimmage himself would see the funny side.![]()
Irish2009 said:Having raced on & off since 1985 I can say the majority of Irish domestic riders ride clean, but there have been a few that have tested positive & been punished. Now that's cleared up, second from the left in the photo is Kevin Kimmage, Paul's brother, and a class rider as all the Kimmages' were.
