Phinneys performance yesterday was massively impressive, do people think Cancellara could beat him in an 8km prologue like yesterday because that was a seriously impressive performance.

The poll is for an 8km prologue

Yes is the short answer for me. I know they are different prolgues and in 2010 but it's comparable.

Taylor Phinney (USA) BMC Racing Team 0:10:26

Tour de France, Prologue : Rotterdam (Ned) I.T.T. (8.9 km)

1. CANCELLARA Fabian SAX 10'00" 80
2. MARTIN Tony THR 10" 50
3. MILLAR David GRM 20" 35

In good shape Cance is unbeatable in prologues.

Can Phinney repeat that perfomance every time? maybe.
Can Cancellara? Definitely.

Anyway yesterday's field did not contain any Time trialists who really stand out, whilst Cancellara has been beating stand out Time triallists for a long time now.

Lets say 5 90 degree corners not to technical so a fairly average route

Then I would say Tony.
Cancellara doesn't seem to be the Cancellara of 2010 anymore. If he refinds those legs then Cancellara.
Phinney would be close but i don't think he can beat the two big guns now. But he's only 21 let's not forget this. In a few years he'll be unstoppable in prologes.

The shorter and more technical it is would tend to favour Phinney, whereas an increase in length or decrease in the number of corners would favour Martin. Cancellara would sit between both of them for both distance and cornering.

So basically it depends on the course. Phinney 3-6km and technical. Cancellara 6-8km and moderately technical. Martin 8-10km and open. But Tony would probably be favourite on a 5-6km open course too. Likewise Phinney and Cancelllara could challenge on a 10km course if it was tight. Could be overstating Phinney's ability on a technical course though, Cancellara probably just as good.

Lugano? Cancellara unstoppable.

Cancellara is consistent enough to put in this kind of performance every outing. Who would have imagined he would have placed 3rd at the worlds last year?

Has Wiggins retired in this hypothetical? If not my money is on him.

(intended less snarky than it reads!)

When Cancellara was a second year pro he was winning prologues in Rhodos. Enough said.
He was also 2 years younger than Phinney. When he was the same age as Phinney in his neo-pro year, Cancellara was ranked 56th of the world according to CQ. First GT he rode was the 2004 Tour, and he won the prologue.

They're hardly comparable in such straight terms.

I think Cancellara and Phinney are probably quite close to meeting each other with one on the up and the other slowly on the down slope.

lol. Watching pisti set and select all facts around his extremely parochial world view is hillarious.

this reminds me of people saying they were blown away when wiggins 'won a bunch sprint' the other day

sure he won a little sprint, but there were no sprinters there

pretty much exactly what we saw at giro stage 1

Well Cancellara was clearly the 3rd best time trialist last year. Wiggins and Martin each beat him every time they faced off (think it was 3 times each). We have to see if Cance has got back to his best this year.

If they all were in good form then it would be Cancellara. Phinney will be strong in future time trials, but at this time Cancellara would still beat him. Phinney wasn't facing off against any of the big name time trialist in the Giro prologue, and in the world championships TT when he did face them he was 15th.

Note that Tyler Farrar, placing 29th yesterday was 36sec off the winning time. In the 2010 opening TdF ITT he placed 7th at 28sec down. I voted for Cancellera, but I am not as certain anymore.

Cance had a quicker course, with better riders, and had a larger gap to every comparable position, as such, I would still back Cancelarra, although this time next year things may be different.
