It is possible to argue real differences between a $200 carbon and a $500 carbon frameset. The differences simply aren't as great as gas pipe vs. Prestige.

I'm grinning here... actually differences between steel are rather academic. There's a famous test on all kinds of steel built into exactly the same frame. People couldn't feel a jot of difference.

And yes, I ride Steel and Alu, not carbon (don't want to). It's just that this is plain and simple missinformation.

A bike is the bike.

I thought this was about cracked carbon bikes, not about how steel is real. When you push a bike to its limits is where you find the difference in materials. Then there is also the weight factor, but I think the most important is the geometry. This is of course when the bike size fits you correctly.
Every material has its place. I think steel frames are great for city bikes, Carbon is good for race bikes.

My Trek 9.9 broke at the chain stay.

I know a lot, I mean a LOT of people who race on steel that would disagree with your comment. Multiple state champs too in their respective disciplines, road, cx, track. Just sayin'... ;)

Win on sunday, sell on monday..why pro teams all use carbon to race on, plus like aluminum of the day, BIG profit margins on carbon.

I think the ideal 'race' bike is aluminum. Light, stiff, easy to make custom, cheap but not as 'sexy' as carbon, carbon, everywhere.
