Tbh Laf has a point and I imho she is a special situation as she genuinely wants to delete her account for a good and proper reason, not just to get back at CN.

Oh :(

Susan - the reason I asked you to delete my account is because I know I can't stay away. I have tried multiple times but I can't.

A suggestion for that is to give another poster on here the password to your account and then let him/her change the password without telling you and you will be never be able to go on here again..

Though personally I feel like Laf should have a right to get her account deleted considering it is something she is doing it for a good purpose both for her and the forum and not merely to spite CN.

Over the years we have had multiply request to close or delete users's accounts.

We will no longer do this.

If you want to leave the forum, simply log out and don't log back in.

Thank you.

Susan

I always thought that one day, when I’m not interested in CN Forums anymore, I hold the right to "burn all my bridges", which would mean not just leaving this place, but also having my user name (which is my recognition sign in several internet communities, not just there) DELETED. Now I see, I am deprived of this right, hence feel treated like a piece of… which I think I don’t deserve… :(

All I can do now is to delete my personal information (maybe tomorrow you’ll say I’m not allowed to do so, how can I know? The politics here is changing in a blink of an eye) and to erase this place from the bookmarks of my browser.

Good Bye and Good Luck…

Why not get a new feature put in the forum that allows users to delete their own account?

Pretty simple solution there, right? Even Facebook allows that. And Facebook blows.

Forget waiting for new delete-my-account feature (or any other new feature). Not likely to happen. Easiest if imperfect solution: delete what you want to delete - though if you have thousands of posts, this is highly impractical - and then change your password to something long and complex and don't write it down.

Optional: under your information section post the words: This user is deleted.

Alternative method: create a second account without trying to hide it and carry on a dialog with your other persona. Result: permanent ban for both of you. :D

You have put this through Legal?

As a British registered site, governed by British Law, there is the small matter of the data protection act.

Amongst the various details you store about the user, you store their email address. Because of this, each user is perfectly within their rights to have their email address removed, which of course would make their account inactive.

If this request is denied they have every right to request the court order their data amended or deleted.

If you havn't put it past Legal, I suggest you do.

Please delete my account, I do not wish my email address to be held on your system, and I make that request in line with rules set out by the British Data Protection Act.

Many thanks.

....and just to make sure everyone is on the same page on this issue maybe the CN staff could run this up the flagpole with the legal folks during their numerous very long meetings that they are presently having to deal with that very tres important Papp affair....

Cheers

I think the forum will be deleted before any new feature that we will benefit from will be added.

Yes it does, but I am disappointed in your lack of ingenuity, Chewie. I figure you could get yourself kicked off the forum and all posts deleted in about 7 seconds if you put your mind to it. Surely that old monkey-jerk image wasn't the limit of your imagination. Maybe we should, in the Games & Fantasy Cycling section, create a contest for the most ingenious, dramatic, and fastest ways to get a CN forum account deleted. Prizes could include a Velorooms t-shirt or a ride with Joe Papp.

Someone could always contact the Information Commissioner and ask their advice about whether CN is holding onto information for too long.

http://www.ico.gov.uk/complaints/handling.aspx

If you have a complaint about the way an organisation has handled your personal information – perhaps they hold information about you that’s wrong, they have held it for too long or they have lost it – we may be able to help.
How do I know if my complaint is about how an organisation handled my information?

You should follow the advice on these pages if any of the following apply to you:

You believe that an organisation has used, held or disclosed information about you:
- unfairly;
- for a reason that is not the one it was collected for; or
- without proper security.
You believe an organisation is holding information about you that is:
- inadequate, irrelevant or excessive;
- inaccurate or out of date; or
- kept for longer than is necessary.

If the above doesn’t apply, you can go back to the main Complaints page or call our helpline on 0303 123 1113 to ask for advice about the type of complaint you should make.

Before you complain to us

First, tell the organisation concerned and give it an opportunity to put things right. Many problems can be solved quickly without us getting involved. You can call our helpline on 0303 123 1113 for advice to help you to solve the problem.

What happens if I cannot solve the problem myself?

If you have contacted the organisation about the problem but have been unable to solve it, we may be able to help.

If necessary, we will look into your complaint. If we think the law has been broken, we can give the organisation advice and ask it to solve the problem. In the most serious cases we can order it to do so.

We cannot award you compensation. Our main aim is to get the organisation to change the way it works so that it does things properly in the future.

So you can write to Daniel Benson in the first place asking him to review and change CN's policy regarding the non-deletion of personal information.

If Daniel Benson (CN/FP) were to refuse to amend their position and agree to deleting information as per the users request then you should contact the Information Commissioner.

If anyone wishes to have their profile and posts deleted, please DM me and I'll take care of it as soon as I can. If you post a message below that's fine but it might get lost in the conversation, so back it up by sending me a message.

Thanks

Daniel

Ignore the haters, if you want to delete your account CN has a thread that shows you how to do it. This feature has been here since the creation of the forum. ;)

CN's FAQ on How to Delete Your account in one easy step! The number of examples are limitless!

:D

Just wanted to say - great post.

Unfortunately, the only flaw in it was that if your name is posted there you are locked out of your account. all the posts are still available for everyone but you.

If you want to instantly get all your posts deleted, the quickest way is to write a few posts using a fake IP and in the style of BPC. Then you are gone and the earth gets salted. :)

Thanks for being a voice of reason....:)

I can't understand why being sober and rational is so uncommon these days.

Thanks again.
